Why can't we close our borders to prevent illegal immigration?

If you REMOVE the reasons for illegal aliens to come here, it's much move effective than just border protection alone will ever be. Border protection is also essential though. It helps keep out criminals and drug runners. Does anybody dispute this?? Does anyone NOT think we need to increase border protection to control this also??
Jail, fine, and/or put employers out of business that hire illegal aliens.
Cut off any monetary assistance to illegal aliens and their families by any governmental agency.
Prevent illegal aliens from renting or buying houses.
If these problems aren't fixed, no immigration bill is ever going to solve any illegal alien problem.
We will be looking at another "amnesty" 10 or 20 years down the road AGAIN...for the third time.
Its not that we can't, its that Washington does not have the will. You must keep in mind those that want open borders, big business, Bush, and Mexico. Oh and yes the liberals.
Here’s why the politicians want them here. Given present demographic trends Hispanics will be the majority ethnic group in the United States by 2050. Republicans and Democrats both want those new voters. Whichever party can receive the majority of their votes the way Democrats receive most of the black vote now, will be the dominant political party and will get to run the government.
The big-money political contributors also are buying cheap labor with their campaign contributions to the big-hearted politicians. They pay the government to look the other way. The consumer gets cheaper goods and services, but then has the social costs handed to him, too. He gets to pay such things as the 2.5 trillion dollars in new social service needs the new amnesty bill will create, but never seems to put two and two together and realize that the higher taxes built in to the things he buys are the few cents he saved on the lower-priced fruits and vegetables that used to be picked by American citizens. Only now this money flows through the hands of the politicians who provide the needed social services.
Yawn. Anybody that says they do not have a problem with immigration does. Just like anybody who says I'm not a racist, but those freakin Mexicans are taking my jobs and welfare is a racist.
Bottom line americans are spoiled brats. And thumb me down all you want but I was born and raised here, I have never seen such a sense of entitlement in any other country I have visited.
Because realistically speaking we have two of the worlds longest borders going through some of the worlds most hostile and remote terrain,,,,,, and,,,, idealistically speaking, a country that holds itself up as the worlds defender of freedom and democracy can't just close it's borders.
Well, in this case, your house is almost 2,000 miles long. Add another 5,500 for the northern border (unless what you really mean is keep out the Mexicans). Furthermore, democracy and freedom aren't really served well by walls and fences.

For the same reason that most of our laws aren't enforced.
Not enough funding to pay/equip enough enforcement
officers to do the job. There's also the matter of the border
patrol agent who got jail time for excessive roughness.

I agree with you.. I don't have a problem with immigration as a whole, what I do have a problem with, like you said, are those who are coming here to take and not give (illegals).
We just need a big wire net around our whole country :) Hell, I'll make do with a 20 foot electric fence with razor wire and armed guards in the towers :)
Cry about illegal immigration all you want, but you can't do anything to completely stop it. Quit acting like walking over a border is the only way they get in. Ever heard of flying in and overstaying your visa, the route chosen by most illegal immigrants.
I don't think it's that hard. The problem is our government doesn't want to. They don't want other countries to be "mad" at us.
We MUST have the fence! We have a fence down here in San Diego and it has helped a lot. The twits in Washington, and Mexico, keep claiming it won't work. Well we have proof it does!
Our politicians leaders have more interest in lining their own pockets with the money from the business lobby than doing what's good and fair to tax payers
In addition to all that has been said, We can't build a fence spanning the entire border. We have a treaty with the Apache that states we can't build a fence on their reservation. The treaty also states that we have to allow all Apache to migrate freely between United States and Mexico, since its part of their culture to travel freely in their territory and that we split their territory between the U.S. and Mexico.
We can, and we should have a long time ago. Funding is in place for a fence to be built. But it is not being built. I have always supported Bush, but no longer. He actually wants to give amnesty to millions of illegal aliens. It's all politics between the US and Mexico. But I tell you this, if the amnesty bill passes the American people will revolt. NO AMNESTY!!

Why can't we just enforce the current laws, then they would not want to be here.
If they could not get jobs, buy cars, or rent/buy property, they could not stay here. But the laws were not enforced and they are doing these things anyway. That is why they are here and they will keep invading until our government stops them.
