I'm in the software business. I did this.
in 1993, I was recruited & brought over by an agency, that got me a J visa (18 month training visa). Once I'd been here a while, I got my green card & eventually in 2004, I became a US citizen.
So - there are other visas (such as a J) that do NOT require a college degree.
