Did the Democrats know the immigration bill would fail? Was it a set up all along?

WAS IMMIGRATION BILL A DEMOCRATIC TRAP? -by Dick Morris

Did fifteen Democrats vote to kill the immigration bill to assure its defeat and guarantee that the Latino vote would go Democrat in the 2008 election?

Was it a set up all along? Did the Dems lure Bush into a compromise knowing that the GOP base would go ballistic and inflict a high profile defeat on the president sure to cripple his presidency and give the Hispanics a well publicized slap-in-the-face courtesy of the GOP?

Only my appreciation of the lack of strategic intellect in the Democratic Party inhibits me from saying yes to all these questions. But I still wonder?

What do you guys think?

Answer:
Since over 80% of Americans were vehemently opposed to this bill and statistically there are more registered democrats than Republicans, I would say that the Democrat voters were just as opposed. Now maybe the democrat politicians did this or maybe they were as afraid of their constituents as the republicans were (with good reason too). If I were a democrat I would still vote out those who would play games like this with my life and my country for the pursuit of power.
It doesn't matter if they intended to do it or not - it happened.
I think that smacks of consiracy theory. When a controversial measure fails to pass a critical test, Senators can and do go back and change thier votes for reasons of political expediency.

An analyst on the News Hour gave the opinion that the bill was probably within a few votes of cloture, but, when it became clear those few votes were not forthcoming, a dozen others changed thier votes - floating with the political breeze.
The democrary want that bill to past because it would give them more voices and people who would vote democrary.
You are thinking too much. The Dems thought the bill was a done deal. No one counted on the revolt from the American people. The voices of the people in the US were heard. Most of the Senators got the message.
Most latinos are going to vote Democrat anyway.
Close.

We did it to get the Republicans on record voting against it, so we can whack them with nit in 08. The dems who voted against it can take the hit, the GOPers cant.
It is not the bill we dems want, we will pass that one in early 09. No sending people back to their home country to apply, it is nothing but a tidbit thrown in to appease the bigots. That wont be in the final bill that does pass
Who cares? Amnesty is wrong no matter which group tries to legalize illegal aliens.
1. Legal hispanics are against amnesty.
2. Why would they alienate 80% of Americans who do vote? All of the presidential contenders in the Senate voted yes.
3. I have found as I traverse through life that it is nearly impossible to understand the motives of the insane.
4. Dick Morris is trying to sell his book.
umm.. President bush was Very much behind this bill.
He made many phone calls yesterday before the vote in an attempt to get more votes for his bill.
no one "lured" bush into anything. In fact he is the one who "lures" people into mistakes (Iraq) Not the Dem's.
This bill was oppossed by huge number of Americans both Republican and Democrat, so the reps ( at least some of them ) had to listen to the voters. A lot of us sent faxes, letters, emails, and phone calls to kill this thing.
the problem is not the bill, its that they cant agree on anything anymore, this started way b4 the immg. bill; once they get it together i'm pretty sure they'll come up with one that they'll pass
