The influence of welfare?

I have a theory that our country's welfare program is a big motivating factor as to why people try to come here illegally from other countries. They know that they can get paid by the government if they don't have much to live on. I've never liked welfare anyways and have always thought we should get rid of it. What do you all think?

Answer:
I don't believe that welfare has the influence on immigrants' desire to move here that you imply; what I DO believe is that welfare keeps poor, unskilled, uneducated Americans from taking low pay/status jobs because they know that they can get welfare instead. These available low pay/status jobs are then filled by the (illegal) immigrants.

Something has to be done to induce American welfare recipients to leave welfare, and to take these jobs. THEN we'll have some idea as to how many temporary workers we need to allow into the country to do the remaining jobs.
News flash is it broken and on its way out,,,,,
Funny, most of the illegal immigrants I see, work harder than the natives.

Which is why a lot of employers like to hire them, especially construction contractors and farmers.
Welfare has got to go! Economic status has nothing to do with the ability to work. Lets put them to work picking something and send the illegals home!.
If they are illegal, how do they register for a government program of welfare?

Support programs need to exist, but I agree that welfare, in its current form, allows generations of women to get knocked up and generations of men join gangs and do hard drugs.
No, that loop hole was closed. You have to have a valid Social Security # and be citizen to get welfare.

But "crazy" is right- it keeps Americans from taking jobs they are qualified for- the majority of welfare recipients are to lazy to get more skills and training to get a better job, and think they are too good to work at jobs they are qualified for....
I agree in that I think the welfare system adds to the problem. However, I do not think that we should do away with welfare. I think we need to revamp our welfare system.

We need to have better monitoring, more concrete case plans, restrictions and enforcement of violations. Most people who use welfare stay on it approx 2 years which is what is ideal. They use that time to better themselves and then move on able to support themselves.

It should be that you have to prove your citizenship to qualify ( I know this is how it is suppose to be but somehow it still happens)and then be expected to follow the case plan and reach your goals. If you don't at the end of the time you are on your own.

The sad fact is there is only so much money that is available for these programs. Some restrictions need to be put in place.
I think you're right on the money.
You need to keep working and paying taxes to support them.
Because they do jobs that Americans won't, so we must subsidize them.
