Where are you from? Do you know any links between languages?

I am interested in linguistics and etymology and I just found out that the name 'Halford' comes from the OE name 'Hlafweard' - which means 'keeper/warden of the bread' - I noticed that 'hlaf' which means bread is very similar to the Slavic (Polish/Russian etc) word for bread which is 'hleb' - an internet search revealed that they have the same etymological root - I'm sure there are many more examples- do you know any?

I recommend Chambers Dictionary of Etymology to trace the development of most English words from an origin shared with most European and Indian languages.

I am born and raised US citizen and my ancestry is Irish and Cherokee. I find it interesting that spanish, italian, and phillipino are very similar. Example: How are you? In spanish it is cómo es usted? In Italian it is come siete? In phillipino it is come asta?
