House Votes to Put Brakes on Bush Administration Plan to Allow Mexican Trucks on U.S. Highways
WASHINGTON — The House voted overwhelmingly Tuesday to delay a Bush administration plan to allow Mexican trucks full access to U.S. highways.
The trucks would have to be declared safe first, the lawmakers said, and Mexico would have to give U.S. truckers the same access south of the border.
The House voted 411-3 to approve a three-year Department of Transportation pilot program that would restrict opening the border to 100 carriers based in Mexico. They would be allowed to use a maximum of 1,000 vehicles under the pilot program.
The Bush administration wanted to start a pilot program this year that would run for a year before fully opening the border to Mexican trucks.
The House bill, however, specifies criteria for the pilot program before it can start, including setting up an independent panel to evaluate the test program and getting certification from the inspector general that safety and inspection requirements have been met.

I can list numerous reasons why the Mexican drivers should not be allowed in the US...mainly because they do not have the same safety standards that my husband, who is an owner/operator, must follow in order to operate on US highways.
Besides the accident rate rising, so will insurance rates as many of the Mexican drivers do not carry insurance that will cover the damage caused or loss of life caused by their unsafe vehicles and lack of experience driving our roadways.
Allowing Mexican companies to operate their trucks and drivers in the US without making them comply to our laws will be a total disaster to the trucking industry in our country. I hope that strict measures are put in place before this plan is allowed to move forward.

A few weeks ago US truckers tried to have a rally around DC and the beltway. All the trucks were empty. They got pulled over by the police and given tickets, told they couldn't be there on the Beltway empty with no load.
