SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Three people were killed and 12 were injured early Monday in a high-speed chase and crash involving a sport utility vehicle filled with illegal immigrants, police said.
The chase began after midnight when a Ford Excursion carrying 20 people sped past Natalia, Texas, police at 100 mph, police said.
The Natalia police officer chased the SUV into San Antonio, where San Antonio police joined in the pursuit until the vehicle lost control and rolled several times near Interstate 10 East and Loop 1604, police said.
The rollover sent 15 people flying out of the SUV, police said. Three of them died at the scene. One victim was airlifted to University Hospital in critical condition. Two illegal immigrants ran away, police said.
The illegal immigrants were from Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras and were headed to Houston, police said.
The driver of the vehicle, a Cuban national, was charged with capital murder, police said.
"The fact that a death occurred while the person was fleeing the scene or fleeing while in the commission of a crime made the offense a capital offense," said San Antonio police spokesman Gabe Trevino.
A spokeswoman with Immigration and Customs Enforcement said that some of the immigrants will be detained as witnesses in the driver's trial and they and the others will eventually be deported to their native country.

Yes, but we have identified them and can deport them. At least its only a short term expense.
We should be billing Mexico for all of those expenses. If they aren't motivated to change their country for the better, then maybe being liable for illegal immigration expenses will get their butts into gear. Sadly I doubt that even that wouldn't spark a change.
At least they didn't make it to Houston. We already have plenty enough illegal immigrants here. We do not need anymore.

The obvious solution is to build the border fence so the police aren't dealing with immigrants driving 100 mph. Did the police have any real choice? A vehicle full of people traveling that fast? They had to do something to protect others. Had the driver pulled over or even driven at a reasonalbe speed it would not have happened.
The fault lay completely with the driver and the illegal aliens attempting to sneak into this country. I am very sorry they were killed but they were killed in the commission of several crimes. They are the bad guys, not the police.

People who are not legal in this country need to stay out or get legal. Plain and simple. It's ok for us to Vacation in a foreign country, but if we just dropped anchor and decided to live there forever, we'd be booted out on our butts! The US needs to have a much stricter policy, and enforce it better. Send the bodies and the injured home. They come over here illegally, and then while they are here, they break the law? Send 'em back.
Law enforcement is one of the few things our government does that doesn't strike me as a waste of taxpayer money.

Lots of waste here. Human life first and foremost.
People run from getting caught at criminal activity. In doing so, they risk their own lives, the lives of the police officers, and the lives of innocent bystanders.
As much as I hate the loss of human lives, I'm grateful that this doesnt mention the loss of life of innocent police or citizen bystanders.
