Do you think employers of illegals should be fined, punished and possibly lose their business?

The onslaught of illegals has become a huge concern to many people (especially living in my area of the US...North Carolina) What do you think is the best way to stem this tide?

Answer:
I agree with you and, further, I feel that:

It should be illegal to give welfare and medical treatment (other than for emergencies and after their emergency treatment they should be immediately deported) and any other social benefits to illegal immigrants.

And, the children born in the USA of illegal immigrants should NOT be given US citizenship status as that is a huge magnet also for illegal immigration.

Cities and states that declare themselves "sanctuaries" for illegal immigrants should not get any Federal transfer monies for social benefits that they give to illegal immigrants.

I feel that these things, combined with severe punishment of employers would almost certainly remove the problem of illegal immigration, at little or not cost to the taxpaying citizens as many would leave on their own and future illegal immigrants would change their minds about coming. The only ones who would continue to come would be gang members and those in the drug trades or other criminals such as pedophiles and murderers, etc. and we could spend our resources on fighting them much more strongly than we are now at present, if we are no longer paying for the other illegal immigrants.
Yes. If no work was offered, nobody would come here illegally. The government can control business a lot easier than it can control the entire border with fences and cops and courts. It's not the most humane thing, to be chasing down the illegals who are trying to make a nice living and feed their families -- but there's no humanitarian reason why American owned businesses can't check hires for citizenship. If you can't run a business legally, you should not be allowed to run one at all.

Unfortunately, our government is run by people who get into office on the "generosity" of those businesses that hire illegals, and our laws are written by business lobbyists - so there's not much chance of this happening.
Well I think an immediate fine, regardless of if the business did attempt to screen them.
A fine and business license suspension if they didnt try to screen them.
A larger fine and suspension of license if they knew illegals were working ing for htem and a fine to individuals in charge.
A large fine, revocation of license and prosecution of people in charge if they willingly recruited illegals.
YES YES YES!! If this would happen illegals would deport themselves.
YES. This is the main problem. Employers need to be punished! These business owners have been making millions of dollars for themselves but at the same time, making the Americans pay for their illegal employees' health care and other entitlement programs. The illegals have been a problem in the border states for decades but now they are spreading like crazy all over the states. I'm glad people are waking up to this issue.
I would start with one employer. Grab the CEO and exacute him/her for high crimes against the US. Anything less is a slap on the wrist, what is needed to get this country back on the right track is for a few people who bring it harm to be made examples of.
Not going to happen. American employers want them here...sorry.
Let's face it--if you were doing ANYTHING ELSE ILLEGAL- there are laws that would fine you, imprison you and yes, lose your business license---and that is where the sword should go--a fine is a slap on the wrist to these slave users--and that's what they are- if we can force our local legislators to go back to congress and the senate and force a bill that stops the employment of illegals with the use of pulling their business licenses ---say, suspensions starting at 90 days for first offense-180 days second and loss of license for 3rd offense with imprisonment! But we would actually need police to patrol the known businesses and bust them routinely--the suspensions should come with hefty fines that could be used to hire federal/state/ or police to patrol said companies. It sounds easy enough, doesn't it? The Humane Society does it for animals with a lot less employees--this should be very easy.

Don't feel bad- I live in PA and I live North of Hazleton- the town that made national news for evicting all illegal aliens from their town---and guess where they came? To mine--they literally took over sections of our neighborhoods--and we now have gangs and the need for spanish speaking employees all over the place.it's disgraceful..our ancestors came in legally and were given NOTHING for free--they had to learn the language or not be able to work..why should we be so lenient to people that breed contempt for us, expect everything for free--and they get it--food stamps, welfare, free medicines, free healthcare and free education for their illiterate children---but they have the money to buy expensive cell phones and have fancy cars---HOW??
Go after the employers who hire them. It is after-all federal law.

Federal Immigration and Nationality Act
Section 8 USC 1324(a)(1)(A)(iv)(b)(iii)

"Any person who . . . encourages or induces an alien to . . . reside . . . knowing or in reckless disregard of the fact that such . . . residence is . . . in violation of law, shall be punished as provided . . . for each alien in respect to whom such a violation occurs . . . fined under title 18 . . . imprisoned not more than 5 years, or both."

Section 274 felonies under the federal Immigration and Nationality Act, INA 274A(a)(1)(A):

A person (including a group of persons, business, organization, or local government) commits a federal felony when she or he:

* assists an alien s/he should reasonably know is illegally in the U.S. or who lacks employment authorization, by transporting, sheltering, or assisting him or her to obtain employment, or

* encourages that alien to remain in the U.S. by referring him or her to an employer or by acting as employer or agent for an employer in any way, or

* knowingly assists illegal aliens due to personal convictions

Penalties upon conviction include criminal fines, imprisonment, and forfeiture of vehicles and real property used to commit the crime. Anyone employing or contracting with an illegal alien without verifying his or her work authorization status is guilty of a misdemeanor. Aliens and employers violating immigration laws are subject to arrest, detention, and seizure of their vehicles or property. In addition, individuals or entities who engage in racketeering enterprises that commit (or conspire to commit) immigration-related felonies are subject to private civil suits for treble damages and injunctive relief.

yes
Yes,because if the employers didn't hire the illegals, they would have no reason to come here. It's hurting our economy badly, and it's hurting the legal immigrants in societal ways. After all the hullabaloo started, I found myself looking in particular at people of Hispanic descent and wondering if they were legal or not. This is terribly unfair to the legals. I went to high school in New Mexico, and it never entered anyone's head to wonder if someone was here legally or not. I worked at Tyson's Chickens in AR several years ago, and they had many, many illegals employed there. They didn't ask for proof of identification or residence or anything. I met one young man from Peru, for example. He was an illegal and made no bones about it.

I believe if we punish the employers, the problem will abate.

DAISY, I WISH I COULD VOTE FOR YOUR ANSWER 10 TIMES!!
I have an idea. What if we send in immigration officers to raid businesses and remove the illegal workers - and then notify welfare and unemployment agencies and make the people collecting these entitlements either work or give up their benefits. By the way if an employer learns that one of his employees is illegal he is not allowed to take any adverse action against the employee. Unfortunately that is the law. Lastly, it is very easy for anyone to obtain a legitimate drivers license and a perfect social security card. It is very difficult to tell who is legal and who is not. As an employer, I feel the government should have a system that verifies status to protect everyone.
Sorry to say but,YES employers must be held accountable for their actions
No.

They should be JAILED!

They are destroying America.

Soon there would be no jobs for illegals. Then there would be no illegals.
Ok, let me pose this another way. Would the DEA not take action against a business dealing drugs out the back door?
Would the business owner not face legal repercussions?
Of course, they would.
A business that depends on any illegal action to operate is not in the nation's best interests overall. There should be no distinction between hiring illegal aliens or any other crime committed by a business or it's owner. Those that claim they would lose their business get no sympathy from me for they have violated the law, and I would expect somewhere have juggled their taxes illegally to cover payments to illegal aliens.
One large Arkansas company CEO was granted immunity for testifying against AgSec Mike Espy although they were ones who gave him "gifts" in the 90's. That same company managed to beat a 36-count indictment brought by INS in 2001. I wonder how many 'gifts' helped their cause.

Remove the jobs by proactively reporting companies and demanding increased raids on employers. Make it cost prohibitive to hire illegal aliens, instead of legal immigrants and citizens.
yes to all. how do we make it happen. we get a government that is going to enforce our laws.
It's a start, yes.

attrition through enforcement, employer sanctions, no anchor babies, no education perks, massive deportations... like I said it's only a start
Yes, Yes and Yes..
