I am so tired...?

I am so tired of hearing ______ American this and that! I think if you live here in America shouldnt you be just an American? I think everyone should drop the Mexican-American, African-American, Asian-American, etc. we are all Americans as long as we are here legally right?

Answer:
I could say I'm an Italian- Irish- Iroquois- Jewish- Welsh-American, but that would imply some kind of allegiance to the aforementioned nations, which I do not have. I am an American, born and raised, and most importantly, LEGAL.

" I was born an American; I will live an American; I shall die an American!" - Daniel Webster

"We must not confuse dissent with disloyalty." - Edward R. Murrow

"Our country -- when right, to be kept right; when wrong, to be put right." - Carl Schurz

"The notion that a radical is one who hates his country is naïve and usually idiotic. He is, more likely, one who likes his country more than the rest of us, and is thus more disturbed than the rest of us when he sees it debauched. He is not a bad citizen turning to crime; he is a good citizen driven to despair." - H.L. Mencken

"Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country." - John Fitzgerald Kennedy

"The government is merely a servant -- merely a temporary servant; it cannot be its prerogative to determine what is right and what is wrong, and decide who is a patriot and who isn't. Its function is to obey orders, not originate them." - Mark Twain AKA Samuels Clemens

"If you want a symbolic gesture, don't burn the flag; wash it." - Norman Thomas
I see your point and agree with you 100 percent. Yet, today every thing has gotten so politically correct.
I totally AGREE with you!
Either they are an AMERICAN. first and formost, or they can GET THE HELL OUT OF THIS COUNTRY!
We are all Americans, that is true. I am sick of any anti American sentiments and then those very people want benefits of this great nation, that is what I get tired of.
Yes you are absolutely correct , however by getting rid of ethnic labels you will force people to put their individuality ahead of their skin color and that just leads to more difficulty for political planers to label and pander to different groups. next thing you know things like personal responsibility and freedom will run amok. God forbid!
I agree with you. I have roots in Europe, and I don't demand to be called Eupoean-American. I think it is stupid and I will not do it. If the man is black, then I will call him a black man. If he is Chinese, I will call him chinese. These titles are ridiculous, and the morons in the media are the ones that keep adding fuel to the fire. They are so afraid of not being pc. The media morons are so afraid of ratings and lawsuits, that is why they are the ones that place these labels.
It is a question I have asked myself often. When do you let go of your roots and come to be American? It will be pretty hard until all Americans are treated equal. Until then I suppose you do need something to separate the different groups. How else would you know how much respect you are supposed to give that certain person?
I totally agree. It's like people are almost ashamed to be Americans. Whatever, America is still the best country in the world. I think most people outside of America would risk their lives to be Americans.
You are right. United we stand, divided we fall.
Common sense should tell you that people are giving a description (because we are all hiding behind a computer... no one can tell what race anyone is). For instance... When ever pro-illegals try to play the race card & states that White Americans are racist... I politely let them know that I am Black & a middle-classed American citizen & I am totally against illegal immigration as well (it is not only white America). People give descriptions to clarify their race when people can't see them. Don't take it personal.
Agreed.

Never hear Irish American or English American or German American much, do ya?

Make me sick to hear these bogus hybreds....
Ethnic distinction is made when needed or necessarily. People do come from different parts of the world and there's nothing wrong with preserving their ethnic identities. People don't use these terms to become some kind of separatists.

What about Irish Americans, Polish Americans...etc. These people call themselves this way mostly when they're talking about issues concerning their heritage, traditions and their identities.

People shouldn't have to erase their traditions just because we move to new country.
You are absolutely right. But the liberal *** holes who are always screaming about rasism, this ism and that ism, are the same ones who are pushing rasism by insisting that we all have subtitles, and giving special benefits to selected titles through affirmative action and slanted journalism. If you live here, are a citizen, love this country and all of it's opportunities and freedoms, than you are an american. that's all. If you are not an american, and you are in my country, I would like to see you deported immediately or shoot on the spot. I have no mercy for terrorist or illegals or even communist politicans. kill them. We need a mean government. We need a bunch of George S. Patton JR types in every office. Love america, and hate thy enimies.
I agree with you, and true Americans feel this way in their hearts. However, tylergrl has an excellent point about self-describing in a blind situation like this forum. That helps emphasize the lack of real racism in this issue, to demonstrate that is not a matter of race or ethnicity, but is an issue of concern to all. It needs to be taken in context.
I'm an American.
You are right.
Thank god I am not the only one that thinks this is BS. Its idiotic to say the least. Yes, we are all Americans if we are here legally.
I think it promotes racism to be truthful because it almost screams look at him he's ________ American.I don't like labels and that is a label.
Exactly! I was reading an article about Singapore the other day, and how it has Chinese, Indian, Malaysian, British, and all kinds of different people there ... they emphasized that people mainly get along because they put SINGAPORE first.

Not a Chinese Singaporean, for example, but a Singaporean Chinese. Same should be here ... AMERICAN first. Don't care if you're originally African, Russian, Mexican, or whatever ... your baggage should take a back seat to the matter at hand!
Amen to that!
Yes, I agree. I have been saying this ever since the blacks insisted on being called african-american. I think it is stupid, especially a black person that has never even been to africa and were not born there.

Everyone that is a citizen is an american. Everyone that is in the process of becoming a citizen is african-american, asian-american, mexican-american, or whatever.
