You may want to obtain your matricula consular at the Mexican Consulate if you won't have a valid passport . However, if you are Mexican the immigration will probably not bother you if you are flying from the U.S.
My son is half Mexican and he goes to Guanajuato every summer with no questions asked.
Mexican migration office are very tight and strict with issues regarding mexican Visa and have an strict control of entries to it's country, so without a renewed mexican Visa you will not be able to travel or enter mexican territory, so you have to renew your mexican Visa to avoid further annoying problems for you!

You need to renew the passport before travelling to Mexico.
I dont think you need any passport to enter Mexico. you do need a US passport to return into the US, it's about time.
You do not need to renew your mexican passport to come back to US as long as you have a current visa to get back in.
In order to travel to mexico you will be asked for your mexican ID as the voting card to travel along mexican territory.
But it never hurts to have your papers in order so, I sugest to renew your passport as it is an important and valid ID document all over the world.
