Hispanic Leaders Blast Schwarzenegger's Advice to Turn Off Spanish TV?
"You've got to turn off the Spanish television set," Schwarzenegger said Wednesday night at the annual convention of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists in San Jose, Calif. "You're just forced to speak English, and that just makes you learn the language faster."
Rep. Linda Sanchez, D-Calif., called the governor's advice a "typical sound bite solution to an important issue," said Jim Dau, a spokesman for Sanchez.

How dare he say something like that? I am hispanic born in the U.S. I listen to English channels but I also have to listen to spanish channels to know whats is going on in other cultures and my own. I have family overseas. How am I going to abandoned what is mine so I or anyone else learn English. He is racist and from what I heard last night a killer too.
I agree with him 200% I still say that they ned to deport all illegals no matter where they are from.
I agree with him, if you come to this country to live you should learn to speak English. If you moved to any other country would you want the people there to change to English or should you learn their language? Hope you can see the point of why they should learn English.
I believe that everyone should be able to at least speak functional English, that being said, Spanish speaking TV is different that U.S. TV. Aside from the language I don't understand what is being said but I can tell it is different than what we watch. That being said, whatever they do, I hope they don't learn English the way Arnold did, Because no one can understand him.

When you can't speak the language of the community around you, it's impossible to assimilate. When a group of people don't assimilate, 1) they become a burden to the community around them, 2) the community misses the opportunity to learn about the group, and 3) the group fails to understand what is important to their community.
I saw a group of non-english speaking families at a national park. Everyone around them watched as the group prepared to leave and leave a lot of litter behind them, ignoring the sign that read "keep our park beautiful, dispose of all trash". The people around them took offense and started yelling at them. Because the group didn't know what anyone was yelling, they just walked away, leaving the trash behind. As the people got into their vehicles some of the people started to run at them, throwing pieces of the group's trash at them. That incident right there 1) created a burden because someone had to be paid to pick up the trash, 2) created racism of the community towards the group of people and it helped to create racism of the group towards the community.
If the group had known english then perhaps they'd have picked up their trash. Then again, because they don't speak the language of our country they don't understand the importance that we place on picking up trash and so they ignore the cultures of the US people.
If you think that Spanish Speaking Only people are not racist towards the English Speakers you're racist. It works both ways. Racism is hatered, hatered comes from ignorance, ignorance comes from a failure to communicate.
When the group fail to learn the language they are taking action against their community and the community becomes offended.
Swarzenegger assimilated out of respect for the US and its people.
Maybe the Govenator is finally starting to stand up to the special interest groups that run California.
As for the comments from Brent Wilkes, national executive director of the League of United Latin American Citizens, what does learning to speak the language of the country you plan to live in have anything to do with holding onto ones culture?
Arnold gave good advice and its really stupid that the Spanish immigrants can't see that. (Or just don't want to).
Here is an immigrant that came here with nothing and has become Governor of the state of California.
If you can't follow the advice of someone who made it then you are just a lazy complainer that enjoys life at the bottom.

Well, he is right. The only way to learn something is to completely submerge yourself in the culture. By calling him a racist, the Hispanic leaders that have a problem with it, they have a problem realizing that you must speak a good amount of English to get a good job.
If I go to any other country, even just to visit, I am expected to know the language. If not, no one will help me. The same principle applies to the US. If you don't want to take the time to learn English, we won't take the time to help you... at least most of the citizens won't.
What irritates me the most is the fact that a lot of places have the option of reading in english or spanish. If you are here, your english should be good enough where that option is not needed.
Of course I agree with him.. He learned English (mostly) and look where it got him?

Why don't we english speaking Americans learn spanish, that way we will at least know the names that they call us when they make fun of us on the bus, and in the grocery stores.
We need to accomodate them, because after all, they are guests in our country. We need to show them that good old american hospitality. Bake them some pies. Have a spanish -american ice cream social. They would do the same for us !!

I agree with him. He speaks from experience and his heart. What he doesn't know though is most mexicans are unable to learn a second language.
well as many of u know i am all for a legalization and about Schwarzenegger's Advice all i have to say is that i have been giving the same exact advice for years , plus i would go as far as to advice to have at least one room in which everyone in every Hispanic family only speaks in English . so i somehow agree with him and i really don't think he meant it in a bad way . he as an immigrant knows about the struggles of learning a new language .
i would recommend the Simpson's for the little ones since most kids from Mexico know and watch them most of the time .

I agree with Arnold,My husband HAD to learn English,knowbody was going to speak Hungarian to him.He watched cartoons Sesame Street ect. to learn.That wasn't exactly fun for him but he HAD to learn.He would have dictionaries all over the house to look up words.My father,and both grandfathersHAD to learn English.In the "old days" people went to school as children and none of the kids even spoke the same language,some were German,Russian,Greek ,Italian,Hebrew ect.but they all learned English together and learned to get along with each other.That is what we mean when we say that America is a melting pot..
God forbid that anyone come between Spanish speakers and their right to keep Spanish as their native language.
I am a pro-reform guy, and I do agree with Arn. Watching English TV and reading in English are keys to learning the language fully. I personally watch both, English and Spanish. People tend to watch things in their language only, since that's what they understand, but listening to other languages is as important as talking them.
