no, you say sayonara when you leave, or you say oyasumi nasai, which is a little more polite.
Japan is a modern country. they are used to foreigners there, they won't kill you or eat you or stare at you.
But work on the language. English is not their best language.
i believe most Japanese speak English so you should have no pr obs there usually nice to foreigners as long as they use manners bowing etc very polite people
