What would happen to the economy if immigration became legal?

Would the economy benefit from it since there would be more legal laborers in the work force ~or~ Would the economy shift negatively since companies would have to pay more money for the labor they were once paying so little for?

Answer:
I am assuming that you mean if amnesty is passed

Yes, and No, those that are no longer illegal will move into the next level of jobs that replace USA citizens by lowering the wages. Also those former illegals will apply for food stamps, Wic, free lunches for their children, and welfare. It has been said that the amnesty will not allow welfare of any type, but we all know that false and forged documents, and the fact that many agency do not ask or have such sympathy for the former illegal what getting all types of benefits is taking place now and will in the future, and I am sure that some group will file a class action law suit, and all those benefits will continue as the law suit is being considered. As the former illegals move into higher paying jobs, new illegals will move into the jobs the former illegals held, being that amnesty just means waiting for the next amnesty, because there are no safe guards on either the border are the ports
What do mean? Immigration is legal.
Immigration IS legal.
Wake up buddy. We don't need Immigration reform, it is good as it is. The law just need to be enforced!
typical well thought out Liberal question
It already is legal. Yes if everyone followed the legal immigration laws the economy would benefit.
that's a possibility that companies would end up having to pay more fore the LEGAL labor. but i look at it this way... you cannot have an increase in population at the rate we have had for the last 10 years and there not be any negative effects on the economy. there's a reason why countries limit the amount of refugees coming across their border when say a war breaks out.. or an environmental disaster.. it puts too much strain on that country's resources. we've seen it happen with our even more crowded jails, hospitals, and welfare lines... i'm afraid the worse is yet to come. even if illegals are deported. the damage has already been done.
Lots of people would have to start cleaning their own houses.
Reduced labor costs means people are making less money. People who make less money, amazingly, spend less money..

Some immigration is good, but we've got FAR too much of it.
overpopulation. less jobs, more unemployment. TOTAL CAY-OUS!!!!! I think they need to limit immigration even more
What?Do some homework or at least a web search before asking a question!
Immigration IS legal!
The economy and quality of life would be greatly improved if all of our immigration laws were enforced.
No change from Immigration its allready legal, however Illegal immigration is a tremendous setback to the country financially and in MANY other ways.
There's already some legal immigration every year. If we made it unlimited, then we'd have a billion people move here overnight. And there would be such huge competition for jobs that wages would drop down to minimum wage, and there would still be huge unemployment, and the economy would collapse. We can only absorb a certain amount of people in a given amount of time.
