Some Hispanic leaders lashed out Friday at California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's advice that immigrants should "turn off the Spanish television set" to better learn how to speak English.
Schwarzenegger, who immigrated to the U.S. from Austria, recently told a group of Hispanic journalists that immigrants should stay away from Spanish-language television, books and newspapers.
"You've got to turn off the Spanish television set," Schwarzenegger said Wednesday night at the annual convention of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists in San Jose, Calif. "You're just forced to speak English, and that just makes you learn the language faster."
Rep. Linda Sanchez, D-Calif., called the governor's advice a "typical sound bite solution to an important issue," said Jim Dau, a spokesman for Sanchez.

Lets go further than that. Remove all the "press one for English, 2 for Spanish" telephone prompts, remove the Spanish labels on all our products in the stores, etc. Then maybe they would HAVE to learn the language and assimilate.

Gee, you don't tell a group of Spanish Networks to stop watching your programs and learn English.What did you expect them to say? It was a stupid arrogant statement. Why didn't he say, I see the need for your Networks, but I highly encourage Latin immigrants to watch English Speaking Networks to promote the learning of English...

i absolutely agree; however, the immigrants likely see no need to learn english. they have their own sub-culture here in the U.S. and have their own stores, entertainment, etc. MOST don't wish to embrace anything about the U.S. besides our money (and hopefully education if there are children)
I whole-heartedly agree with Gov. Schwarzenegger. A country who cannot understand each other's language is a country divided. They are the truly disadvantaged who will not make the effort to speak the language of the country they choose to live in, because certainly no one except the incarcerated is forced to live in the US...and when they're released we'll be happy to see them go.
I agree with Arnie, according to him, that was how he learned English.

I agree with him 150 %! One would think that a good way to learn to speak a language would be to listen and read the language. If one continues to only take in their own language, then they will never learn another.
Please..common sense says that if we are a country of immigrants.everybody has a homeland and a country and a language that is different than here. ALL white people don't speak English. He's white.he speaks Austrian.he came here and learned English.therefore he is BILINGUAL!! He speaks 2 languages. We have people speaking a host of different languages and their NATIVE tongue isn't ENGLISH. ENGLISH like it or not.is our countries common language, Whoever is the majority doesn't win in this. We would literally change our countries language.what?...every 10 years? They have always said if Hitler won the war we would be speaking German now. I'm German...also French...and Irish and Sioux...how many should I know before I can survive here? My kids have Dutch and Norweigene and Cherokee? How many should they know? They are "white" looking. But they are also native. How do you know? What's the test?

I have friends who have been here for 15+ years who still cannot speak English properly.It's so funny when we go to some place like Dunkin' Dounuts and they are incapable of asking for a bagel with cream cheese. They'll ask me,"How do I ask for that ?"I get so frustrated with them when I go to their houses and see Telemundo playing on the TV 24/7.I keep telling them that one of the best ways to learn English is to put on an English speaking channel. Those Telenovelas (soap operas) all follow the same plot anyway.

for the first time, ithink Arnold gave the hispanics some really sound advice. apparently he speaks from experience on being able to assimilate. maybe not PC and that's a giant leap for him.
I had to concentrate on his words, he needs to refine his pronunciation. His message was not really taken offensively, it is only a recommendation, the Hispanic media present agreed with him. Spanish Tv is fun so I choose to watch that, as do millions of other people.
