Why are the loony left so ashamed of british history?
Answer:
You fool, Jim. You're just believing everything you read in the Daily Mail.
The Daily Mail gets cross because history in schools today consists of more than just learning a list of kings, queens and dates.
History teaching in schools is not left wing dominated, nor is it a re-write of British history. No one is ashamed of Britain's past - our military victories, our great contributions to art, science and engineering all feature in history teaching in UK schools.
It's just that occasionally, historians remember that the rest of the world had a history too, and it's not a sin to mention this (except in the eyes of the Daily Mail)
EDIT: So, Mowhok - it's the same old crap. Great. Enlighten us with your wisdom, then! And which bit do you object to .. dissing the Daily Mail? Wanting to celebrate Britain's contribution to the world? Spotting that the world doesn't end at Dover?
Mowhowk - glad you've found someone to read the Nick Griffin quotes to you. And yes, I will continue to copy and paste Griffin's quotes on questions involving the BNP, because I think it's important that as many people as possible know, from his own mouth, what an odious man he is.
If you object, then counter it with argument. Explain why the quotes from Griffin don't show us that he's a racist in a shiny suit. Explain the 'context' that justifies Griffin's words supporting white supremacy and holocaust denial.
Because they are soooo politicaly correct and have no idea of the real world
Because they are sick demented misguided fools.
Not only did you abolish slavery in your country, the British effectively ended the slave trade throughout the world using the British Navy.
Because during the empire the british treated people under its rule with contempt. Although anyone trying to re-write history is wrong, what happened happened, we should learn our lessons and move on
REALLY The PAX AMERICANA makes the PAX BRITANNICA look good ! even awesome !
There is nothing to be ashamed about abolishing slavery and fighting on the Allies side in both World Wars. There is, however, a lot for Britain to be ashamed about its role in the Crimea War, the Anglo-Boer War, Helping Tito's Communists take over in Yugoslavia, and its role in the latest wars there and in Iraq. It is amazing that, while Communism and hard line Islam is regarded as bad by the West, Tito and Izetbegovic were regarded as "good" by the same hypocrite West.
i dont think all leftists are like this. lots just dont like what has happened in the past and wish the kids to be reminded and taught that it is wrong so that it never happens again.
life is life is life. things happen the world over that other ppl disagree with, even now. we need to all stand together to stop it, schooling isn't the only way.
people need to take more personal responsibility, even those empty kettles which make so much noise.
They are following orders from Moscow
It's easy to abolish slavery in a country where you don't have many slaves (i.e. Britain, 200 years ago). It took us a lot longer to abolish slavery where the slaves were actually working (Jamaica, Trinidad, etc).
There is much to be ashamed of in British History. Britain was by far the worlds` biggest slave trader. For over one hundred years this country openly condoned the kidnap rape brutalisation and enslavement of millions of people. I just don`t see how anyone can put a good spin on that by saying that we abandoned the practice before other nations. Britain was also the worlds greatest ever pusher of addictive narcotics, most notably heroin and opium. When I say pusher, I mean real strong arm forcing it down your throat type pusher. This country went to war with China because the Chinese administration wanted to stop the import of opium and heroin that was causing so much damage and misery to their society. Again I find it difficult to see how you can put a positive spin on that. You don`t have to be a loony to feel a bit uncomfortable about slavery and heroin dealing. In fact many people would say that you would be crazy to think that these things were acceptable.
Fighting against the Nazis does not necessarily make a nation any better or worse. For example Sadam Hussein fought a war against Iran when Iran were considered by many to be a nation of fanatical lunatics. Does that fact justify any thing that Sadam Hussein has done?
The Boer war. The British were the first to set up concentration camps. British colonial past and Imperialism in Africa and many other countries.
They have to justify wasting years at Uni on useless Psychology degrees somehow.
I will be teaching my kids the real facts at home theres no way that they will be turning my kids into PC pus sies.
I'm not ashamed of committing genocide in Tasmania, why should be?
coz everything thing has to be bloody p.c nowadays, history should stay as it happened.xx
YET AGAIN mr sceptic rolls out the same old crap.
SCEPTIC: im surprised you havent added in your cut and paste paraghraph on the BNP that you all ways roll out when you disagree with people.
asfar as our history goes; yes we have done some pretty attrochious acts; however why do the nazi's sorry liberals like you feel we have to keep putting down our own history and culture?. please go on put on your bnp bit you know you want too
What loony left?Granted, the Uk did fight the Nazi's. The UK played a massive part in the slave trade for many years and were, as a nation reluctant to abolish it. Too many people in the UK were making far too much money as a result of the suffering of slaves to want it abolished. To pretend otherwise would be a breathtakingly inaccurate version of history. Anyway slaves were not officially classed as human but were classified as beasts. That doesn't sound like the policy of a caring sharing nation now does it?
The UK exploited half the world in the creation of it's empire. It was a long time ago so maybe it's time not to be ashamed of it anymore. No use in being in denial though.
oh...i see...its hooray for great old blighty is it,ok I know the rest.WE civilised the world, who were all ignorant savages until we showed them how to live. Apart from forcing opium on the chinese.treat indians like slaves in their own country.massacred vast amounts of people all over the world, and then stole all their resources. And British History(which i doubt you know anything about),is notorious for the amount of repression inflicted on our own people(have you ever heard of Peterloo).i suggest you read a few books...it wont hurt, and you will learn how pathetic you Little Englanders really are
I'm not ashamed of our history - but as the previous poster said, we shouldn't be in denial of it either. Just like any country, our history is full of good and bad things. The Empire existed to allow a minority to get extremely rich - otherwise they would not have spent so much money to get and keep hold of it. It's true that the British did some good things during the Empire, in much the same way as the record of Tsarist Russia/Soviet Union is quite mixed in non-Russian areas.
History shouldn't be about either shame or pride; after all, I didn't enslave Africans, nor did I stand alone in 1940. History should be about understanding how we got to be where we are today - like why are there people from so many countries living here today, why are some countries rich and some poor, why do some have quasi-democracies and others are brutish dictatorships.
On Boer War concentration camps: it's true that they had nothing in common with the Nazi camps, but on the other hand conditions for the Afrikaaners forced into them were extremely poor, probably due to military incompetence more than anything else, and thousands of interned civilians died - they certainly weren't glad to be there.
Whatever happened in the past happened, it can`t be altered.
I`m proud to live in this country and I don`t give a flying feck what the stupid braindead loony left say.
They don`t live on the same planet.
They need to be put on an island miles away from the country they are hellbent on ruining.
Tossers all of them!
dont you mean aftet we supported and proffited(and dont 4get that a lot of our wealth comes frm the slave trade) from slavery.Oh dont forget that we also helped hitler and the nasty party.
I do not think they are ashamed with your history, they are just honest. History is not just black-and-white picture, there are some other colours and certain grades of grayness. If you want to learn from history, you need to know what exactly happened, not what you wish it did. Otherwise, studying history is a waste of time.
Good point, Ian B, I would add the Great Famine, for example...
I think that teaching about the slave trade in schools is creating animosity between white and black people. Probably deliberately to cause a divide and rule situation. I think black people still feel very angry about the slave trade for which you can't blame them. and white people feel very defencive for being blamed for something which they had nothing to do with because it happened long before they were born. All the thing's that happened to slaves pretty much happened to the working class our lives had no value even as late as the first world war if a soldier didn't get out of the way of a tank they were just run over. People were hanged for stealing a loaf of bread when they were starving. And white working class girl's were put in service paid a pittance made to work unearthly hours, and quite often raped by the upper class males if they fell pregnant they were placed in lunatic asylums for the rest of there lives. People lives were sometimes so bad that they would voluntarily put them selves in workhouses which was exactly slavery that is what it was. once they were in there were not allowed to leave.
If you research what life for ordinary working class Britons at that time it wasn't an awful lot better than that of a slaves.. basically the working class had F all to do with the slave trade, It all happened a long time ago in a very different Brition. If I went through my family record I could almost definalty expect to find a distant relative who was hung or deported for some misdemeanor.. Basically it is very aggrevating when black people keep going on about apologies and compensation. Tony Blair has appologised so move on.
