Are these words to live by?

"In the first place we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the man's becoming in very fact an American, and nothing but an American...

There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag, and this excludes the red flag, which symbolizes all wars against liberty and civilization, just as much as it excludes any foreign flag of a nation to which we are hostile...We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

--Theodore Roosevelt, 1919

Answer:
Yes, they are words to live by.
We can open our hearts, we can open our minds but be ready to open your pocket book and keep it open if we have to take 300 million people and teach them another language in order to fit into our "new bilingual society" in order to satisfy a few million who refuse to learn English.
If it's good enough for Americans to learn Spanish than we can surely expect Hispanics to learn English upon their arrival.
I believe it is a 2 way street, but it seems the only people giving up the right of way are the people that actually have the right and the people abusing the right of way aren't supposed to be on the highway in the 1st place.
and your point is? u didnt ask a question all you did was give us a little history thx anyway have a star
Senator Kennedy has no idea what that means, now if it was written on the back of a Jack Daniels bottle.

You proved my point Lilly, it's people like you who want to take advantage of our great country. It's okay to use an American to get in but you can't assimilate to our society?

And I guess when Canada is flooded with illegals that don't want to learn their language etc. than their attitudes will change! I can bet money on that!
Could you please post this to every member of the Senate and all the members of the House. Don't forget the President. Wonderful words which way too many Americans have not heard or have forgotten.
This is the age of Political Correctness over all common sense. America has bred too much complacency and copious amounts of stupidity. In many ways that statement is very true. Though I don't think we have the room and the jobs for them anymore because of the outsourcing and unions but that's a different story. To answer the question yes it's all in all how things should be but likely will never be again and Americans have nobody to blame but other Americans.
Yes but unfortunately times have changed. So has the people coming here. Many immigrants today, do not want to be Americans, but just have what we have without the commitment.
I think Teddy was on crack. Horse Puckey!

I am a Canadian going through the immigration process in NYS and my husband is American...I will become a resident of the USA, but I will ALWAYS be Canadian, always respect my flag, and never be "assimilated" !

What the hell, is Teddy "The Borg" ha ha ha ha ha.

Ps. Dont go Thubs dowing me here folks, I love the USA, I bake my husband a red white and blue cake on July 4th yearly, I adhere to your laws, I dont litter in your street, and I will respect your country and build a family here, will pay taxes, shop at your merchants, and invest in your economy glady..but I dont think I am the devil if I still respect Canada for all it has given me my life time.

* For those of you who think immigrants get "Special treatment" we do not, It has been 18 months since I applied to stay here in a legal manner, I am not permitted to work, drive, get healtcare options, or even LEAVE the country to see my sick grandmother in Canada, there is no special treatment here, I am forced to live in a very restrictive manner, and do so , to honor your country and its laws.

GET THE FACTS please before you pass judgement.
Well, I do believe that America is a great country, and that it would just be silly to move here if you hate America. It's understandable to have sentiments from your country of origin, even if you're moving to America because life is unlivable in your own country. That's a sad situation we should be sympathetic to.

However, I don't think we should go about forcing immigrants to assimilate to things such as the English language if they don't want to. What would be the point? When Europeans came to America, did they assimilate to the Native Americans? No, they made the Native Americans assimilate to the dirt six feet underground.

Just because someone in America doesn't know English doesn't mean that they can't contribute in our society. Also, how could we possibly require others to know English, when people born in this country barely understand the language?

Most of the posts on mytend.coms completely butcher the English language. People don't know how to use punctuation or spell correctly, and we're supposed to expect immigrants to understand the language? Is that right?

So--in short--these are not words to live by...
I think it is absolutely perfectly stated. It is the heart of America. And the immigrants get enough damn special treatment. Hell, I should cancel my citizenship, then reapply, because illegal immigrants only have to pay taxes for 2 out of the last 4 years they were in America. It's a joke. As someone stated before, they want all the good stuff that comes along with it, they just don't want to be an "American".
That was 1919 and hopefully people have learned to open their hearts and minds and welcome learning other languages. I live in a bilingual country the Us will one day also learn that it is smart business to learn another language as well. It will be looked upon as something to be proud of. The times they are a changing...we hope .. Canadian and proud of all our people living in our country no matter what language creed or religion .
Answer: One could hope, Bringing back when honor was a part of heart, Such, sadly, is not the heart and soul of America today.
A GREAT Quote! Now the problem...How do you and I get both the quote and the concept out to the bulk of the American mind set?
If we could accomplish that in this era, We could honor and perpetuate Teddy's dream.
They must assimilate to America!
America will NOT degrade down to the level of the un-culture that they left!
Human history has always been change or die!
America says that it is the other that must change!
AND SHE IS CORRECT!
Either you leave your flags at home...Or stay there...
America will stand either way!
The problem with those words is defining what is considered "American". Ironically, America was created on the blood, sweat, and tears of immigrants and the original inhabitants-Indians. How do we then mandate that a country whose inhabitants didn't speak English or carry the American flag assimilate to the beliefs of its guests? Please don't get me wrong, I love this country and have dedicated over ten years of my life in the military to fight for it. These words were meant to foster support in America. We still need to support America but let's not forget America is and will conitnue to be a melting pot.
