Technically, I don't believe so (although after reading the post above me, I might just be out of date on that.) However, you almost can't live without one (work, get credit, etc.) If you are independantly wealthy, but your money all goes through a trust with it's own tax ID number, theoretically you MIGHT not have to. but you might need a different tax ID number.
It's not a requirement, everyone born here gets one! It's your identification.
Wish I didn't have to pay into that system. It's broken, and it's going to destroy this country.

Yes..you have to get one. It's needed for taxes (like child credit etc. on income taxes), it's needed for jobs...it's something we all basicly have to have to do just about anything legally here.

If you are a Natural born citizen of the US then you would've received your social security number at birth, and your mother would have not left the hospital without it.
Yes. When I was young, you didn't need one until you turned 12. Now, the requirement is that a child has one by the time they turn 1. Most hospitals and birthing centers now provide the forms at the time of delivery, and you can fill them in and they will send them for you before you leave the hospital. The cards & numbers are mailed to your home within about 6 weeks.
I know this for a fact, my kids are 5 & 2, and I had to do it for both. By 6 weeks old, I had both their SS#'s and birth certificates.
