Australian residency following cancellation of tourist visa?

In 1997 I had a 4yr holiday visa to Australia cancelled as I was working while in the country. I removed myself as I already had a plane ticket. In 2001 I completed an engineering MSc degree and married my wife (who is an English resident). Her father was also an British resident, but became an Australian citizen in 2002.
We are currently filling in residency application forms under "skilled migration - Australian sponsored".
Do you think my visa cancellation in 1997 for a non-criminal offence would prevent me from achieving my residency visa?
Regards,
Graeme (mallg3@bp.com)

Answer:
I don't think it would prevent residency. Might take a little longer for DIAC to process the paperwork though.

While your visa did expire I think it would look favourably on you that you left without fuss and if you state that you had already bought the ticket home (and your reasons for overstaying). You'd need to be able to back that up by saying you left within a certain time frame of that visa expiring. Photocopy your visa and the stamp that says which day you left would be good.

Incidentally what nationality do you currently hold? And how long did you overstay your visa.
