I am going to have to go through the green card lottery but I don't trust all these internet sites asking me for money in order to get me one. Is this the only way to do it though or is there an official US Government website I have to go through?

your best bet is go go to the us embassy in your country. File there and you can get your forms too, they are going to want a lot of money from you too but at least if you do it there you know where its going :)
You can also find website to USA immigration site through embassy site for your country too I believe.
You will need to contact the America embassy.
