Is it possible to have a civil illegal immigration debate?
They're trying to have that here this weekend and I predict it will completely fail. For example, can a debate occur without bringing up skin color ("all those brown people", "those stupid white people")? Everytime I hear a debate on the radio or TV, someone from EITHER side throws in a race card, false dichotomy or existential fallacy and it goes down in flames.
Clearly, a legitimate debate has not taken place in our government. I know both sides would have to be of a certain maturity and intelligence level to keep a cool head during it. I just wanted to know if you think it can happen.
Answer:
Absolutely it can be done. I have had several civil discussions with people on both sides of the fence and even though, I support the deportation of all illegal aliens regardless of what country they come from, I don't believe that anything can be accomplished by losing ones composure. The reason people get so hot about the issue is because it is an issue that is close to home. I am from a farming community where there are many migrant workers. Some are legal and some are not. I don't wish to see anything bad happen to any of them but, if they are here illegally, send them back to where they came from and tell them to come back when they can do it legally. If there are 12 million illegals in this country, it would be easy to say just on an average making 25 thousand dollars a year (not much but, it's a number) it would be a safe bet that we are losing approximately 60 billion dollars in revenue because 1- there are no taxes being paid and 2 - that money is being shipped to another country.
I don't have a problem discussing this with anyone because I won't resort to anything physical unless it is in defense of myself and my family.
I honestly think the reason that this can't be done is some people act so raciest toward immigration.
Yes, ignore the racists.
Although I agree with your concept, unfortunately political correctness has gone too far. I too, hate racial slurs on either side. But I fear it will only get worse. I think the main issue here is the fact that laws are being broken and people are not being punished for it. Yet a 17 year old boy can be sentenced to 10 years in prison for having consensual sex with a 15 year old girl. I for one am fed up with the injustice.
its like the politics and religion sections.. its hot subjects that ppl take to heart kiddo
I don't think it will happen anytime soon. I am not racist in any way, but I do believe in common courtesy. If I'm going to live in a foreign country, I'm going to become a citizen and at least attempt to learn their language. It's the lack of communication that divides the Americans and Mexicans because it's frustrating when you can't understand what someone is saying. I think Mexicans get the most criticism because it's hardly ever a problem in other ethnicity's.
It bothers me also that illegal immigration is turning into a race issue, especially when illegal immigrants come in all shades and ethnic backgrounds. Someone on here called my a racist for supporting legaliztion of illegal immigrants, as if "illegal immigrant" were a race!
Mexicans are not the only illegal immigrants.
You got your answer with the first response. Pro-illegals always pull the race card because it's all they have. In order to present a rational argument for being pro- illegal alien, you first have to get rid of that pesky word "iIllegal".
It is possible if people know the TRUE pros and cons.
Not supporting illegal immigration is not racist at all. People use race because they have nothing else to back up their points with. People refer to Mexicans as illegal immigrants because while there are illegal of other nationalities, who makes up the majority? Hispanics. They just need to learn to accept it because someone calling me racist doesn't bother me one bit because I know I'm not. It is the fact they are illegal.
Look at the first answer you received and you'll see why there can never be a mature debate on the subject. The race(raciest) card is always used. Until you get people to stop calling each other racist, there will never be a legitimate debate.
Yes, what Heath said! I tried and I am the one that gets called racist and inhumane blah blah blah. I do bring up facts and I get countered with emotions from the proamnesty movement.
The reasons most people on here can not and will not accept to have a civil debates are (and this goes for pro and anti immigration reform supporters):
1. Most people pull facts off the internet that support their beliefs but never bother to look the other way.Even if they're staring at an article that proves them wrong. (THEY WILL NEVER POST THAT)
2. There's no reason for pro-amnesty people to pull the race card if there's no races being mentioned. 90% of the time you usually see "the hispanics/mexicans need to go back to their country"
3. There is people here that purposely provoke others (wheter it's pro or anti immigration reform people).
4. When you are proven wrong (when people post facts etc..) it's time to bring out the spelling & ethnic cards ---- cause they don't want to look like dumb @$$E$.It's their last resource so they use it to make themselves feel better.
5. No matter where you go, THERE WILL ALWAYS BE THOSE PEOPLE THAT DON'T FOLLOW THE RULES! ie.. name calling, provoking violent/racist comments, posting racial comments.
Oh, and by the way people generalize "race" too much!!
