Will the borders ever be secured, the laws enforced? why or why not?

For starters, forget the secure boarders concept. That went out with the Great Wall of China. Remember the Berlin Wall? Physical barriers are cute symbols, but they are useless on a large scale like the boarder between the US and Mexico or the boarder between the US and Canada.
Enforcing the immigration laws currently on the books or the new laws being proposed by Bush and Congress would be a huge and expensive task. As a first step we would have to identify all of the 300 million legal citizens of the US with something like a national citizen database and the equivalent of a national ID card (basically walking papers). There would have to be access to this database at all levels of government. Secondly, the various agencies would have to cross check their activities with other agencies. This means that the IRS checks persons making social security payments and income tax withholdings against the Social Security database. I am only hinting at all of the cross checking that would have to be done which might extend to credit card purchases. In other words, the collective governments would make it impossible to do anything unless you are a legal citizen or visitor to the US. Then we need a police force adequate to meet the needs for arresting and deporting the 10 to 20 million people who are not within the US legally. This is all possible but it would certainly not be cheap.
In addition, citizens are going to have to tolerate quite a bit of inconvenience and annoyance with all of this bureaucratic checking. The politicians aren't ready to take the blame for all of this required intrusion. Instead they talk about passing unenforceable laws and hope that any enforcement will be somebody else's problem.
The main problem here is not the immigration laws at all. It's xenophobia, fear of foreigners. The real solution is that eventually we will become used to the Latinos as we have become used to the Italians and the Jews and the Greeks and so on. So relax. Our latest new comers bring great music and great dancing. May I suggest that you try learning the salsa? Also, those English/Spanish signs are a great opportunity to learn a few Spanish words.

Nope. Theyre are too many people with a vested interested in the illegals. Big business for one depends on their cheap labor and no benifits to increase profits for themselves. Because of that and the growing hispanic population, politicians are too scared to offer any type of border security for fear of losing not only the support of big business but the hispanic vote as well when election time comes

Border police is just more bureaucracy that has to be taxed and paid for and there will allways be one or more that agree and disagree with any way that coin falls.

Not until the rest of us are monolithic in opposing the illegals as they are in supporting the politicians. As long as they can split our votes based on other issues, if the Hispanics go with a single policy vote, politicians will never be on the side of enforcement.
