Immigration- is it purely one issue?
For example immigration is a means for government to import skills for perceived shortages that could have been met by training domestics- were it not for poor management?
Immigration- includes issues of economic exploitation of the lower strata of society by companies exploiting imported labour willing to work for less, thus undercutting a domestic workforce?
Immigration- illegal employment does not generate tax revenue thus the welfare system experiences a net loss?
Answer:
It's a fairly large variety of issues all handily shoved under the catch all heading of immigration, and no one currently in parliament has got the common sense required to deal with any of it.
As far as illegal immigration goes, send them back to the last point on foreign soil and let them get on with it. They've entered the country illegally, there should not be any recourse other than get lost and do it properly the next time. Asylum. What a load of bollocks. Every illegal immigrant in the UK was persecuted in their homeland? Pull the other one, it jingles. If they don't have a legitimate reason, or authority to enter the country since their home is a member of the EU, tough. I honestly can't see why that should be our problem.
Legal immigration, that I've got no problem with. If people turn up with legally and find employment, they're paying tax and therefore contributing to our economy. That makes a foreign worker from, say, Poland better than some of the sponging scum in this country that bleed the system just because they were born here.
Illegal immigration will be one of the top 3 issues by elections in 2008. Another reason for its importance is because of our open borders, which, to me, is a primary threat to homeland security as well as safety and security of our seaports. Also, it will indirectly affect our relations with Mexico and other Western Hemispheric states. Those nations will have to face up to their responsibilities to provide good jobs with better incomes to their own citizens as a deterrent to possible sanctions by the US government. I believe this issue is much broader than just in economic terms and will have a wide-spread affect on foreign policy and matters of domestic security, as well.
tell you what lets take back every person we have exported. in the uk, where would we put everyone? after our little jaunt around the world creating the empire we also left countles people who did not return to the uk.
america is made up of mongrels from all over the world, they would have to go back to country of origin leaving only the tribes. each and every country has either exported or imported people over the centuries so why get stressed over it.
if people are prepared to contribute to whichever society they live in, i have no problem with migration.
also should we narrow it further and send people back to their village or town of birth?
Even so what is referd to as the black economy still generates plenty of income in other sectors of the market other than the welfare system
It's certainly a catch-all scapegoat cause of every problem in the eyes of people like the BNP.
Obviously there are many aspects to migration; some of it is short-term, some long-term; some is driven by the labour market, some for other reasons. And let's not forget that it's a two-way street. At the end of the day, migration is just people moving around to make the best of their lives, something which should be a good thing for all concerned.
That's not to say that there aren't legitimate issues around benefit-dependency and education/training for both natives and newcomers.
You make some very good points - and for once I find myself agreeing with you on almost all of them. Immigration, is a whole matrix of issues, both national and international. Many blame globalisation but capitalism has always been international.
In Britain, historically, the problem has always been poor management, both at the macro and micro levels. It's easy to blame immigrant workers, who in the main are shamefully exploited, for economic and social problems. Just as it is easy to blame British workers for being lazy and less productive than their Continental counterparts.
If we want to live in a decent society we have to find ways to end the exploitation of everyone so that all get a reasonable living wage and have a decent standard of living.
