As Americans, how do you feel about this article when it comes to ANYONE immigrating to this country?

I agreed with immigrants (if we must have them) adapting to our language and culture and using our flag, not theirs. I also agree with freedom of speech. The religious part is a lie spun by the religious right. The founders of this country fought for a separation of church and state specifically to allow people of differing religions practice their own faiths, not to deny people their right to practice their beliefs as some assert. It also allows a choice of secularism over religiousity.
As to the part about immigrants, I'm all for them adapting to us or not coming at all.
In my area there have been raids and sweeps on illegals committing other crimes. This is something the police and Ice can do together. The other illegals and their supporters are protesting the arrest and deportation of illegal criminals. Clearly NOT assimilated. It's a warning sign to the rest of the country that illegals, especially those committing other crimes, can protest their arrest and deportation as though they were law abiding citizens and this is tolerated!

I personally am very much for a non-anthropomorphic religion myself, as I see gods to be mirrors of what we hope, not reality. I do NOT consider it appropriate to display, therefore. We would be better off not using some lame excuse of a voice from teh heavens if we want to make war.

The English were once a mix of Britons, Anglos, Saxons, Vikings, and whatever other Celtic tribes I've missed. And I'm sure there were otehrs prior to that...
The Etruscans are gone, blened into what I suppose is now Italian (Roman).
The Athenians and Spartans all became Grecians (Greeks?) and so on and so forth.
We must devise an American identity.

I tell people, when asked my background, that I am American. When folks persist, I tell them that all of my family was born here. When pushed, I tell them that I would not know the first thing about the countries of X or Y, and people from these old homelands would call me American.

I want (legal) immigrants to come to this country.
I hope that we get part of their culture incorporated into ours (like pizza, general Tso's chicken, Irish beer, etc.), but I think they should melt into our culture, learn our language, and realize what makes the U.S. so great.

whining about rights (that you shouldnt have in the first place) is moot. i just do not understand why we have to adapt to spanish. why is there a option for spanish when i call my local bank? why not other languages? why is there spanish translations for learners driving test when the road signs are not in spanish? Illegals have the right to be treated as humans, they do not deserve American rights because they have not worked for it and they have not abided by American law; hence, they do not respect America. They are so proactive in protesting for equal rights, but i am confused as to why they cannot do the same in mexico with their government? Maybe if they applied the same persistence here in the US to their own native government, they would not be so persistent in coming to the US for a "better life"

people are stating that everyone in the US is an immigrant but one thing that they fail to realize is, since the Mayflower, we have something called immigration law and processing and filing. its to bad that everyone cannot come over on a boat like the immigrants on the mayflower or the slave ships but nowdays in 2007 everyone needs to register lawfully to gain entry into the US. secondly, i was born here as with other native americans. my folks were born here as with other native americans. i am not an immigrant and neither are they because this is our native land. furthermore, usually we stop referencing "immigrant" after the 4th generation. from what these people are saying here, they are making it seem as though we came off a boat years ago. typically, families that have immigrated to the US early 1900's and beyond are not considered "immigrant" rather american citizens.
I agree with this article (and I am a moderate democrat), we do have our own culture, language, lifestyle,etc. I am so tired of newly immigrated people trying to impose their culture on ours instead of trying to fit in. The "politically correct" people need to get a life and stand up for our way of life. I don't understand why immigrants come to this country and try to change it. Wht don't they just use that energy to try and make changes in their own country?

Beautifully put!! I have to say I completely agree with that article 100%. If an American were to immigrate to Mexico, that person would have to speak Spanish fluently, would have to work, would have to renounce their old country, etc. All the things that are stated in that article that the USA no longer does. That person would have to embrace the Mexican Culture wholeheartedly, or be kicked out. If people immigrating here want to live in America, then be All American.
Sadly people who willingly break the law do not care about those it effects .....its obvious that they have no conscience or they wouldnt do it....... so the moral of this story is that an illegal has a mental defect in the first place or they wouldnt break laws and so they will care as much about your bitching as a murderer would when their victim complained.

Is this article in reference to illegal immigrants or legal? If you're talking about legal immigrants than this article makes no sense. The process to become a legal immigrant is lengthy and must ensure that the person applying to become a citizen must either have money or applicable skills that contribute to our society. They must learn English, in both oral and written forms, and are tested on American history and protocol of our government. It's interesting to note, that MOST Americans when quizzed on the same test could not answer some of those questions.
America loves to have skilled labor filling the ranks. In third world countries, families send their children to study here in IT, healthcare, and other lucrative fields. There's an actual complaint that third world countries are experiencing a "brain drain" because America is taking all the brightest people. The main incentive to stay, of course, is the money and the prospect of their children receiving a higher degree of education.
If you're talking about illegal immigrants that's a whole different can of worms. A person deciding to cross the borders without proper procedures should be considered "illegal". Most of these illegals live in poverty, fear and stress. However, America doesn't "need" more unskilled labor. We would like more unskilled labor, it makes it more cheap. Which is why our government want to supply temporary work visas. They work for cheap, then we ship them back out. Lobbyists don't care about you, they care mostly about their size of their wallets.
Personally, I'm against illegals. Due to the fact, that every country in the world will not let you become a immigrant without the proper procedures.
This article is basically a knee jerk reaction to feeling besieged by hordes of foreigners. Who is this article addressed to? Are there any legal immigrants protesting God? Imposing their language on anyone? Where are the examples? If there are any, can I see them?
Are illegal immigrants starting a revolution, conspiring in spanish or otherwise, the demise of the English language and Christianity? Especially since most illegal immigrants are christian?

I think this person is misguided.They refer to this as being their country,well this is my country as well.This country was not founded by one religion.In fact if you check the history of the USA,there were several religions,and several languages.The melting pot has always been here,now i do agree that everyone should know the main language of english,but should never forget where they came from.These incorperation of cultures is what makes our country so great.Not everyone asked to be part of america,some were here first,some were dragged here in ships,and some came of their own free will.But united we will stand,that is the why english is important.But if you look at the english language,it has merged several words and definitions from other languages.If we were to talk about Mexico,if our country wanted to really solve immigration problems,we would help Mexico to become a more financially secure country,so the mexicans would want to stay there.We could have spent half the money that we put into other countries,like IRAQ,and improved our problems of immigration.Why don't we put money,where it will really show a payoff.I have only been on this planet for 33 yrs,and the middle east has always been at war with itself,and sadly will most likely always will.We just need to put our resources where we,as americans can benefit..
The founders of this country left England due to persecutions, lack of freedom of expression, this journal makes no sense, since America is not only composed of North America, we have Central America, and South America, I believe North America is a New comer to this Hemisphere and should adapt to the diversity of ethnicity, what really screwed this country up is people trying to tell other people what language to speak, or where to speak it. Or did all of us forget the Constitution, freedom of speech. I am American, Cuban-American, being born in Cuba, gives me the same wright from any one born in the U.S. to be called American. Is Cuba not part of Latin AMERICA, Second I also have a NORTH American Citizenship. So if you speak other than English and are not breaking the law speak what ever language you what to speak,,,,for who are we to impose what language you want to speak, we live in a free country, we dont live in Cuba or Venezuela, where others tell you how to speak,, I really dont understand the contradiction here, If this country is so free as many claim than why do you care what language others speak?
