It is a myth that Americans won't do the jobs that illegals do. Unfortunately, many people and politicians have bought into that myth. The myth is perpetuated by business persons who seek to keep wages low.
In their mind, why should they hire American workers at $7.50 an hour when they can get illegals to do the job at $5.50 an hour. These corporations that want to continue to hire illegals at low wages support immigration reform that will allow these hungry workers to continue to be available in the work force.
Somehow I doubt the part about Americans lining up to get those jobs will get much media coverage.
all i have to say is this..if your job is being taken over by an illegal immigrant..then there is something bad to say about your working skills...

Now Del Monte is going to have to pay the Americans a lot more money. Seriously, it isn't that hard to figure out why businesses hire illegals. They can pay them a lot less. It's all part of the free market. It just makes sense to hire the cheapest labor. It's not always that they do the jobs Americans won't do, which they do as I don't see too many Americans picking onions in the fields around me, it's that they do the jobs for less money and no benefits. Capitalistic greed will keep companies hiring illegals. It sucks, but do you think wealthy business owners are going to want to change just so you can feel better about not having any Mexicans around?
Yeah, I'll explain it to you. The old, worn out claim that the illegals only do the jobs Americans won't do has been disproved time after time. Maybe most of the illegals work the lower paying jobs, but so will the Americans who are in school, under-educated, senior citizens, or somehow disabled. Illegals are taking jobs from Americans. that is the long and short of it.

We will see if they will stick to their min. wage jobs for long. You see, people want to blame Mexicans for working for low wages when in fact, it is big business that likes to save on labor. The American worker will not go for it for too long.

Now you have 300 legal workers standing in line. How many of these 300 legal workers will keep their job and not look for something better. The stats are there. And they have been proven time after time. That majority of legal citizen will NOT do certain jobs that illegals will do. They may take the job but would only last a short period of time.
Don't try to find only one side of the coin. Look at both. Look at the facts of both. And you will see that what most people are saying is 100% pure B.S.
I think the worst part about this is that these companies are hiring illegals, mostly because they are cheap (the companies I mean, well I guess I mean both). These companies should be getting into more trouble than the illegals. These companies are giving them a reason to come here illegally because the companies don't want to pay higher wages or taxes. We should not be blaming the illegals for coming here and staying illegal, why wouldn't they...these companies are making it easy for them!

If they are so important to our economy, why are those very same illegal immigrants the #1 source of foreign money coming into Mexico? I would think GOVERNMENT AID would be greater - guess not.
According to THE EXAMINER nearly 600 workers were checked out and 165 were found to be "illegal". The power of "spin" works both ways. But to give the benefit of doubt to the local legals, let's see how many of them take these SEASONAL jobs.

It's not that the illegals are doing jobs that Americans won't do, it's that they're doing jobs we'd rather not do for less than what we would take to do them. If corporate America was more concerned about doing business legally, then the illegal immigrant problem would not be as prevalent. However, our capitalist system rewards cost-cutting and loophole-seeking with higher profits and more incentive to do so. However, when looking at the alternatives provided by the former Soviet Union and most third world countries, I can honestly say that it is both the best and worst system that we have.

In reality, this is a "problem" where everyone benefits, including those who complain. Why? When American companies are able to use cheaper labor, they are only paying a small tax on the value added to the product, which results in profits for them. This procedure allows the consumer to buy products that are not so expensive.
By the way, were there actually 500 workers in line with hopes to get a job? That means that lower than 50% were seeking employment. I'm sure Del Monte had ample opportunity (at other times) to hire those who were the most willing to show up to work.
I was a contractor. From personal experience, I can tell you it is impossible to hire legally and still compete against contractors who don't hire legally. The situation is absoblutely absurd. Skilled tradspeople are getting killed, not white collar workers. And they wonder why the middle class is disapearing.

Pull up any Oregon news website and you will see that 165 illegals were arrested. The rest who also had fake social security numbers were let go because they had kids at home, most likely kids the rest of us tax payers are paying for.
