What do we need to do in order to move to New Zealand?

We currently live in the uk, my husband is South African and I am Scottish, and we have a 4 month old little girl. My husband is due to apply for Indefinate Leave to Remain in May, and I have a gut feeling that his application will not be approved as they refused his application 2 years ago and although the criteria is about to change for this particular visa, Im not sure if we will meet the requirements. We would rather not move to South Africa and have been talking about New Zealand, but have no idea how to go about getting visa for us especially my hubby as he is South African. The company he works for are also in New Zealand, so it may be possible that he get a transfer so that at least he would have work when we get there!

I was in almost the same position as you about 5 years ago. My husband is British, I am Singaporean, and our son was only a few months old. We applied for NZ residency under what was the General Migration category which involved scoring points assessed in areas like age, qualifications, etc. We had to take medicals, submit police reports, submit all kinds of paperwork proving earnings, savings, etc. Pretty tough but we got through.

They seem to have changed their categories of application now, so visit the attached website for more info. You can always fill out a general Expression of Interest (they charge you for it though) to see if you will qualify as a family.

The single most important thing is to make sure your husband has a job. The easiest way would be to get in via a work permit through his company, and then apply for residency after a few years of living there.

We lived in NZ for 3 years, and are now permanent residents, and my daughter was born out there. But we came back because the sun in NZ is so strong, and they have no ozone out there, so the burn time is about 5 minutes! I wasn't prepared to subject my kids to long-term exposure to the sun increasing their chances of getting skin cancer. There is only so much sun-cream you can put on, and we were re-applying every 2 hours! People think I'm mad when I say this, but they don't know that there are 67,000 new cases of skin cancer every year in NZ as opposed to only 16,000 cases of every other kind of cancer put together! And there's only 4 million people out there, so the stats are quite worrying. Still, that was our decision, and is not something people know about unless they live out there.

Emigrating is a serious decision, and if I can help in any way, feel free to email me offline. Good luck!
to accrue enough points, on a score system. look on their website.
Immigration to NZ is based on a point-scoring system. You should contact the NZ High Commission in London.
