Yes of course ethnic identity plays a role, and always will. Have you ever heard of cultural identity, and pride?
I disagree with "Think Global act local with love,love !", the statement is idealistic. This is not a question. It's a liberal, hippie, touchy feely service announcement.
I think we should forget about all of our differences, ethnic, sexuality, religious, etc. And start concentrating on our similarities. We would be suprised about how similiar we all are, and maybe we would start loving our fellow man a lot more if we saw them as an extension of ourselves. We are so much more similiar than some people would want to have us believe. Chaos, differences allow certain people to get very rich. Ask anyone who does Forex trading, for instance. And that is a benign form of profit-making...think about those who make money on the wars and oppression of those "different" than us.
Listen to John Lennon's Imagine...he had the right idea.
Ethnic identity should be kept at home and within individual community.
It expose the blunders and slip-ups with human errors of past ancestor's in planet of apes.
Look at the living examples of the mess being created in Iraq.
