Assimilation?????
Answer:
If someone can just learn some ******* english, that is all the assimilation i really need to be satisfied. Other than that, to each his own.
The people who hang Irish or Italian flags don't try to put their flags on top of GOVERNMENT buildings or fly the American flag upside down UNDER their flag either! If they have it in THEIR bars or restaurants that is THEIR choice...unlike when illegal aliens try to take over something that isn't theirs...see the difference?
Don't they have an American flag hanging too?Usually they always do.
The people with flags hanging in a restaurant don't go around waving them and yes I do feel they have assimilated. Because the bar or restaurant has an Italian or Irish feel it's appropriate to hang that flag. I would feel no different about a Mexican restaurant.
My main issue however in reguards to assimilation is the use of the English language.
No but they have some what assimilate. I think that its nice that you want to rep your own country, but at the same time you better rep the country that you live in and raise that flag higher then the country that you used to live in or where you came from
Yes they do because, "they came here the legal way and have worked hard to become Americans". They don't fly our flag upside down under their flag. The mexican's do that here in America. On our school grounds. I can say that about all mexican and even the so called mexican American, they still act like mexicans, putting their nasty toilet tissue in the waste paper baskets instead of flushing it down. They just can't assimilate because of their level of intelligence. mexicans are normally nasty people that should stay in their third world country.
English is the main thing. There is nothing wrong with pride in your home flag. It's how it is displayed. An Italian flag on a pizza box or in an Italian restaurant isn't the same as flying it over an inverted American flag. Hey.put your Mexican flag on your take-out boxes or in your restaurant to compliment your authentic decor. Just don't fly in your front yard without the American flag also being flown. Usually if there's an Irish flag...it's in an Irish type pub. Open an authentic Mexican bar and hang it up inside. I don't care about that. That is having pride in your heratige and part of your culture. No one has said a word about flags being displayed in that manner. It's a problem when it's replacing the American Flag or flown to disrespect the United States and it's citizens. You don't fly the Mexican flag above the post office just because there's more latinos in your town. You don't fly a Mexican flag at our American public schools just because there's more latinos there. I mean common sense, respect and courtesy please. It would be a great idea to take 5 minutes and learn the proper etiquette of the flag. Blending in with authentic decor for a restaurant etc. is fine. I love going to restaurants where it's decorated to re-create a country. I even like to see the menu in a foreign language and then translated to explain what it is or how it's cooked. Great to have real German dark beer or serve an authentic drink your country is famous for. I had a blast at a Irish Pub at the shore one time. Passed out instruments and they had a guy playing piano singing Irish tunes and we all got plasterd and sang along and played our instruments. I loved it. That's sharing your culture. That's what Americans like. We don't like going into a neighborhood where no-body speaks English or cares to even talk to you and all the signs are in a foreign language. I don't care what group of people it is or what country it's from. There is a way to blend in and be part of something without being so overbearing and pushy and still keep and share parts of your culture.
I mean there's OTHER ways of sharing your culture without taking over and being rude. I know places I lived in Florida it was the traditional adobe style decore for down town. Something else wouldn't have fit. But that wouldn't go over in South Dakota in the snow and cold where buildings are more towards German, Hungarian, Swedish designs. They aren't too thrilled by purple buildings. Respect that and find another way. But instead..they just ran people out and painted the place pink and purple and it looked horrible. It didn't fit in. A nice restaurant would, where it was just 1 building and other people would feel welcome as well. I was in Nebraska and they did that. There's a minimum of 10 miles between towns. All small. As a tourist..you'd just drive by that place because it said quite loud a clear..Mexican community. All the signs in Spanish. Not anyone that wasn't Mexican living there. It wasn't welcoming for anyone else at all.
We had what was a Swedish town. There was a big Viking ship as the welcome sign but other than that..you saw all sorts of people there and felt welcome. The diner did have Swedish trinkets to buy but you didn't feel like you weren't allowed to be there.. One of the best Christmas light shows was in another town which was settled mostly by Hungarians. They decorated in their traditional means. Got people from miles around.
I mean there's a way to be proud and sharing and proud and very unwelcoming. So far..I haven't seen a welcome sign in any Mexican community. I get dirty looks as if I don't belong there. Not to mention nothing in English.
it is true. some people are more targeted than others.
