How do you feel about a 70 year old woman gets Bloody nose from police for having a dry lawn?
The retired military and U.S. government employee answered the door at her home Friday morning to talk with a police officer about her bone-dry lawn and ended up getting arrested and suffering a bloody nose.
"What have I done?" she asked. "I'm old now. I can't believe this."
The Orem police officer, as yet unnamed by city officials, cited Perry for violating a city ordinance with her "sadly neglected and dying landscape," which resembles dry hay.
When Perry refused to give her name and tried to walk inside to call her son, the officer tried to arrest her, police say. According to a police news release, while she was struggling, she tripped and fell on her doorstop, cutting open the bridge of her nose.
But Perry maintains the officer split her nose when he hit her with the set of handcuffs he was trying to restrain her with.
"As far as I'm concerned, he really abused me - he brutally abused me," Perry said. "For what?"
The officer called for backup, because he was driving a truck, and the now-handcuffed Perry was taken to a holding facility in Orem. She was not given water or allowed to wash her hands or call her son, she said. http://www.sltrib.com/news/ci_6319911let... be honest with ourselves - this incident occurred because the cop got PO'd that she didn't bow to his authority. His supervisors certainly understood that, as they (1) released the lady quickly and (2) said it will serve as a "learning experience" for him.
Let's brainstorm the ways he could've avoided this incident:
1. Given her a week to get the lawn in order, and told her failing that he'd have to cite her
2. Told her she'd be receiving a citation in the mail
3. Waited to his truck while she called her son (to protect himself from a shotgun-wielding 70 year old)
4. Called his dispatcher, got her name, and left the citation in her mailbox
Also, given that he was "in a truck" and immediately "called for backup," I wonder if the guy was even on duty. Or was he off duty, driving down the street, and took it upon himself to go roust somebody over their yard? If that was the case, quadruple the woman's justification for being scared out of her mind.
Answer:
Have we no illegals to be pursued? Have we no missing children to be found? Have we no criminals on the lam?
Are old women merely easier to manage than real police work? TO--. How was that officer to know she was going to call her son, and not going to get a weapon?Really? That does not however give the police the right to abuse their power. She was in her home for crying out loud! The police officer in question is an idiot! He should be put on unpaid suspension and given time to think about his "field interviewing" technique.
Sorry but this has nothing to do with immigration. It's about a stupid cop that hit an old lady!
I don't understand how an "intelligent professional" police officer (as his supervisor describes him in the article) thinks arresting an elderly woman for an ugly yard is appropriate or necessary. What a jerk!
I've seen quite a few 70 year old women that deserved to be bopped in the nose. I would have to had been there to judge.
70 isn't so old any more.
This is ridiculous! When are people going to realize how many of our rights are in jeopardy? I hope somebody doesn't want to arrest me because i need to cut the lawn.
When the government is telling me what to do with my yard.then they are out of control.
Illegal aliens running amuck, and they are worried about the grass.wow.
First of all, this has nothing to do with immigration. Secondly, why did she have a shotgun? Thirdly, why didn't she give her name? Fourth, why did she resist arrest? Lastly, why hadn't she taken care of the problem in a year? There are two sides to every story. "Let's brainstorm" 1) The lady can take care of her lawn. 2) She can leave her guns in the house. 3) She can answer a police officer when he asks a direct question and not resist arrest. I don't feel sorry for her. Then again, it happened in Utah. What do you expect??
Welcome to the real world ! These sort of thing happens in minority communities quite often, There is no reason for a cop
to abuse the elderly, for any reason. He has a lot of resources to aid him in doing his job. Even if she was guilty for gross neglect of her lawn, The elderly live on a fixed income, maybe she had to chose between watering her lawn and eating.
Why did he have to go to her door, most communities, write a warning and mail it to the house and give a time limit to comply.
I don't really understand why he would arrest her just because she walked back in her house to use the phone. He didn't have an arrest warrant, right? He was just giving her a ticket? At what point did she grab the shotgun? And what exactly did they charge her with? Sounds kind of strange to me.
Well , I.m glad he called for backup, two morons should be better than one.
After living in Florida for 7 awful years, I've learned that a lot of elderly people think they can do what ever they want, to who ever they want to, when ever they want to. It didn't help matters any that the governor at the time was a Bush, who catered to the elderly people for their votes. Regardless of that, I also learned that elderly people will lie through their teeth to gain sympathy, especially when they realize they may be getting a ticket or going to jail for something they did. Then, it all inevitably gets blamed on the fact-oh well, I'm old, I just forgot.
So, I really have no sympathy for that woman, she shouldn't have walked away for one thing. I've heard lots of stories from friends about elderly people pulling guns or knives on them. How was that officer to know she was going to call her son, and not going to get a weapon? Unless he was a friggin psychic or something maybe, but otherwise he didn't act inappropriately. Most states also require you to show some form of id when stopped by police. So there's another wrong for her. She could've avoided the whole thing by complying instead of resisting as was mentioned. I find it hard to believe the officer hit an elderly woman in the face with handcuffs. You're saying that a much younger, male officer couldn't control a 70 year old woman? Oh well, she'll probably sue, and the city will bow down and settle out with her, all because she's OLD.
This thug of a cop needs to be fired. First of all, if he has time to do this, then the town doesn't need so many police. Second, his "big man" complex cannot be fixed, and he will always be a problem. I sure hope this old gal sues and wins a big settlement form that town. This should NEVER happen in America.
Have we no crazy people to commit?
Thats terriable but as for your other question:AFTER YOU ADDITIONAL COMMENT: WHAT YOU SAID ABOUT WILL IS TRUE BUT THAT STILL DOES NOT APPLY, NOONE KNOWS THAT THEY HAVE 7 DAYS TO LIVE UNLESS THEY ARE GOING TO COMMIT SUICIDE. THERE IS OBVIOUSLY SOMETHING YOUR HIDING OR THIS IS A HOAX!! And yes, I did answer this question. That is an terriable thing to do.
