Do you think that anyone that enters this country should be required to speak English?

What is so difficult about this? If someone goes through all the trouble to get here why don't they learn or just try to use English?

Answer:
Maybe they should be given a couple years to learn...but for them to come in..no. But I mean as a requirement, laws are already hard enough. And to answer your second questions, sometimes it isn't 'just' that easy. It's not about sitting down for an hour and learning it, many don't have the money, and others work too long. And I think you're wrong, almost every immigrant that I know has learned to speak English. People just generalize everybody to be the same, I don't expect anybody to learn my language, it makes me look better when I'm the one that knows how to speak various amounts of languages and are able to communicate to more people.
i think we need to be bigger than that. if they are here legally we ought to accept their (percieved) shortcomings.
Be careful. I said that once at work and this arabic chick flipped out on me. I would think a person would want to learn the language of the country where they want to live. They sure learn how to count money quickly.
Yes they should learn to speak english wether they are here legally or illegally. I we went to Russia, would we expect them to learn english for us? No, we would have to learn Russian.
well YES this is America even if they took the american citizen tests it is required the person to know how to speak and read and write ENGLISH.
The US can require fluency as a threshold for granting citizenship, possibly as a threshold for granting permanent resident status.

But it's irrational (not to mention economically unwise) to require fluency in English for all tourists or anyone just passing through on connecting flights.
Yes, if not as soon as they get here, shortly after.
I don't think they should have to know English just to enter our country. If I wanted to visit Italy, I would hope I wouldn't have to know Italian. At the same time if I planned on living there, I think I should have to learn the language. That goes for here too.
For citizenship, yes.

Otherwise, no.
of course they should, America does not need them, they need America and they should repect it, I only lived in Germany for 4 years and i did all i could to learn german and live the way they do.
of course not, still 94% of the world don't speak english, so people from other country is not obligated to speak english.
I don't think they should have to sometimes it's hard for those people to learn English So don't be Selfish no offence!

MMMMMMMMMMMWWWWWWWWWAAAAAAAAAA...
It sure help since that what we speak. The 1s that don't want to speak English are trying 2 change our way of living? Since it's a requirement 2 get citizenship.
So do you propose to keep out tourists and foreign diplomats?
No they should not be required. However they will face consequences if they don't, so it is in their best interest to do so.
Yes, they wanted to be here...well that includes showing RESPECT for those here in the US!
there is nothing wrong with speaking another language as long as you try to learn English to communicate but this country wants to do the opposite I went to a doctors office went into an examination room I looked at the signs hanging on the wall they were all in Spanish nothing in English but what can we do when no one listens to us
Some English would, help those who come over here that need help to start their new lives, there not always others around that speak their language and they might need some English to get started.
YES,,,, if you go to other countries and dont speak their language your in trouble.. cause even if they speak some english they arent gonna speak english to you.. they will just say NO speak english.. This is a english speaking country and they should learn before they come here legally or illegally.
if they dont know english then give them sometime after a couple of months then theyll start to be able to know english thats what my parents had to do when they immigrated from Ecuador but since its easy to get through speakin spanish then theres no reason to start right away but with the materials being given like ingles sin barreras then theyll be speakin the language muy pronto
English is the official language of this country. And so is Spanish. Either is fine.
But anyone speaking other languages is welcome, but should start to speak in either of these languages within a year of two. Otherwise, their life will be living hell.
Those who enter our country legally are required to understand a degree of English. Those who enter illegally have no loyalty to America...only to getting what they can take and using what we have. They are leeches who have no respect for our laws or our traditions.

Mexico encourages this invasion as a way to steal back what was rightfully purchased. Mexico's support of the illegals has a purpose and we are idiots if we continue to bury our heads in the proverbial sand......
I think to live in America you have to learn English or you would have a hard time making it here. I sure as hell am not going to learn Spanish.
Que? Si,mi hablo espanol, por que estudias espanol? In America habla ingles? Nadie habla espanol.....And so I dont get a violation for the wrong language,It was a statement that if I,an American citizen can learn spanish then why cant they give me the courtesy of learning english?
YES im sick off trying to find the english on the back of the shampoo bottle. It doesn't make sense to have drivers tests in different languages when the signs are in english
Ok well think of it this way...say you move to Mexico and you don't know Spanish, how long do you think it would take you to learn it, would you seriously be able to learn it fluently in a month or two...probably not. In general people dont absolutly refuse to learn english...its difficult, and when you move to a barrio you can get by without it, there's very little exposure. So yeah people are trying, but i think people need to be a little less cocky about it and rember that it would be pretty hard to learn another language just like that...
I'm guessing you have never heard Bush make public speeches - he's a great example that one doesn't have to have command of the English language to succeed.
Yes. They should at least try to learn the language of the area that they live in, instead of expecting other people to learn their language.
No! Todos deben aprender el sgundo idoma mas hablado!
Aprendan a Yahoo que ha creado dos secciones ( Bilingues) para temas estadounidenses.
I agree.
it would be helpful, but its not that easy. my dad doesnt know a lot of english
