Yes, but the US govt always seems to act upon a problem after the horse has already left the barn so to speak.Border security is the last line of defense before entering this country...it should be a TOP priority...

Sealing the border is a good idea for more than one reason. Anyone that believes that people sneaking into our country is OK, has no concern for the well being of this country.

Our borders should be guarded like when I went into Communist Hungary in 1977. There are guards with machine guns and everyone was checked.
They had a sign with a camera crossed out and like a dumb kid I took a picture. I almost got is BIG trouble. Why can't we enforce our borders like the Hungarians did?
Let's be honest here. It is easy to argue that having tightly-secured borders are in our best interests. the problem is that this country isn't run in our best interest. It is run in the best interests of corporate America. Politicians occasionally pay lip service to what they think we want, just enough to keep us content and showing up at out jobs the next day. Mostly, though, they are selling this country to Wal-mart, Starbucks, Exxon-Mobil and Microsoft, a little bit at a time.
It's not in Corporate America's best interests to secure our borders. Therefore, it's not going to happen.
Yeah, well we already have OUR guns and bombs inside their borders. We've been buying oil with weapons in the Middle East for half a century. They have too many guns for the same reason we have too many cars. It's the "military-industrial complex" at work. There's a line in the Bible somewhere - "Sow the wind, and reap the whirlwind." Of course it should. We are a soverign country with the right to secure our borders. The gov't of the USA seems to have a different idea of "homeland security" than do I. When we want to keep people out of our yard we put up a fence. These fences have gates to let in who we want and keep out who we don't. If our federal gov't can put up thoudands of miles of "sound protection" fences between highways and houses they can certainly put up a fence to keep out illegals at the mexican border.

The answer to your question is that maintaing such a high level of security would not be possible. "Shouldn't" we just try to prevent such an attack to begin with? This is exactly what Chertoff is doing. If you think you can do better, send the president your resume but try to get the punctuation correct first.
All borders should be secured. Unfortunately our own Homeland Security Agency is stating this cannot be done. This is B.S. They don't want to do it because Bushy doesn't want to upset Mexico. He wants his legacy to be the North American Union, what he'll really get is the notoriety of being the worst President in U.S. history.
