Can a fence on the border really help the illegal immigration problem?

It needs to be an electric fence in my opinion.
When you add the sniper towers every so often, it'll do wonders.
The fence will ultimately do nothing but cost at least 100x what the govt. tells you it will cost.just look at the Iraq fiasco.
People need to base their opinions on reality and not just feelings.
There are walls in some places, and it's not stopping them. The proposed walls aren't much either, not very tall, not very thick, generally cheap and shoddy construction. I think it's a waste of $.
its like crime on the street, if the police did something about it, they wouldn't be able to justify their inflated budgets

A fence will only help if there is some kind of forcable enforcement on this side of the border.
well its a start. They should be the same kind of fences that prisons have around them, with electricity and razor wire. that would be more effective than just a standard metal fence. Also i think instead of spending billions of dollars to pay illegal citizens medical bills, welfare, etc, we should cut it off from them and invest it in more border patrol agents. they only make like $25,000 a year! thats not enough to raise a family on!

Many house thieves enter by coming through a window, but does that mean you won't lock your door when you leave home? Build the wall; electrify it at the top, barbwire it, whatever, and keep border patrol agents watching it. It may not solve the problem, but it will help. When solving an algebraic equation, the first step doesn't solve the problem, but the problem will never be solved if you don't perform that first step. A wall may not be the final answer, but it is part of the solution.

A fence has pushed the border crossers from Sandiego to points east (Arizona and New Mexico). It will slow the easy migration from Mexico.
What will kill illegal alien migration will be enforcement of just the 1986 laws that prohibit hiring illegal aliens. Send a few people like the head of Tyson chicken to prison and run a picture of him in a belly chain and cuffs on the evening news with story saying more busts are on the way and the draw of cheap labor will dry up overnight.

Obviously, I will not completely stop the influx. However, It would certainly get the flow down to a level that can be handled by the Border Patrol, right now they are simply overwhelmed. They pick up illegals, they are sent back only to cross again a few days or sometimes hours later. Coupled with other measures, it will certainly help get this problem under control. Add to the fence a national ID, prosecution of employers and a system of selecting immigrants based on merit and you'll have the problem under control with the added benefit of making it more difficult for mor terrorists to get in.
No. I don't think it can stop the problem but I think it will help. The people that hire illegals need to face big jail time and fines in millions. Then maybe they would think twice before they would hire an illegal. I think that might help some to. Plus no welfare to illegals ( of any color).
