my wife called the uscis after not hearing and she was told she was approved. we didn't receive any other notification and she called back and was then told her status was pending?

how long does it take to hear?

also, would an immigration attorney be a good idea? how much do they usually cost?

Do you have the I-485 receipt notice, if so you can go to www.uscis.gov and check the application status. Your receipt number is needed, should start with MSC-. In Houston,Texas
I-485 cases are being processed within 6-8 months. More info would help with a better answer. You will not be notified that you are approved, because you and your wife have to attend an interview before approval, unless you have already attended the interview and additional evidence was requested.
An attorney may be able to track all this for you, but be very careful, there are many immigration attorney's who will rip you off. Find your status on-line, then decide what to do. If everything was filed in order, the whole process should be over within one year......hopefully.
