what used to take only 6 weeks at the most, now may take several months...if you need it faster, then expedite it and pay the extra cost...
it doesn't take that long. usually less than a month will do it.

back in 2004 it took me about 2 or 3 months i think. they sent it from new orleans passport agency.
After submitting an application, it should take 2-3 weeks. I'v gotten passports (for my family) in as little as 10 days.
I applied for mine at the end of May, they said not to expect it until mid to late July. But many people are not getting them by the time they are promised. They give you a phone number to call if you don't receive it by 2 weeks prior to your departure date. I think they quote you a 10 week time frame.
***The expidited service some people are talking about costs $80 in CA where I live.
It depends on what countries you will be visiting. The paperwork requirements have increased and a lot of the time is related to you getting all the documents required for the passport. To visit Asia or the Middle East can take up to 3-4 months, other countries it will take about a month once you have all the paperwork completed.
I sent in a renewal mid-May - not here as of today- so over 6 weeks.
Some agencies can get you a US passport application processed in one afternoon. You have to pay $300.00 cash though. If you do it through the post office, it can be either with expedited service, you get in two weeks or regular service which could be up to 12 weeks. It all depends on how much you are willing to pay and how badly you need it.
