It's actually $5,500 over a period of 6 years not 8 (they added an amendment stating this yesterday). The head of the household would have to return to their native country and re enter IF the household desire to become permanent legal residents.

They have to pay $1,000 to start the process and the other $4,000 when their applications are approved.
I wouldn't pay *, they can't guarantee that they would never come back!!! Either way, why would you want them to never come back? Some of those people help out our economy and I'm one of them! (internet run business with an estimated $1M in sales, I'm sure americans love all the taxes I pay)

Hell NO I wouldnt pay...I think we need them here (the decent ones anyway...La Raza and such can just leave) and they do a great service to our government by paying in taxes that go unclaimed and putting money into SS that they will never get.
Only if they CHOOSE to apply for citizenship. If they want to only be legal residents, no fines. In addition, they currently have no way to collect the fines or to check if they actually return to their home country.
If this piece of crap passes, how are they going to prove that the illegals were here as of 1/1/2007? Are they going to accept a statement from the criminal illegal aliens, that are already breaking the law, that they were here by the cut off? What about the gang members that will be allowed in if they renounce their membership in gangs - sure, like I really believe them - sarcasm (the Senate seem to).
The $5000 will do jack for the budget. Of curse Kennedy and McCain won't say that to you... They illegals,once legal will collect more than that each year on taxes, by claiming all their kids ( and we know they tend to have 3-4 kids). So yeah Bush, way to go! We will end up giving them even more freebies than what they can get now. See they can only get state welfare now, they will be able to get federal welfare too once they become legal...
