Does anyone else think it should be prerequisite to learn English to live in America?
Answer:
Of course it should!
This is not that complicated people.
Use logic and reason.
Choose Reality!
I'm so sick of all this politically correct BS and multiculturalism.
LEARN THE DAMN LANGUAGE OR GET OUT!
that would be nice. it seems like there is a spanish prerequisite to get any decent jobs.
Yes. You shouldn't have to speak it perfectly but you should have the basics down.
I think so it has been the dominant language of this country since the beginning
No, I don't. But I also don't think it's the responsibility of the government or society in general to accommodate those who choose not to learn the language.
There are people who agree with you. I do not. First, people are people, don't get upset because they sound different. Second, America has had no trouble integrating large foreign immigrations - over time non-native speakers will learn English and their children will grow up speaking English in school. Forcing people to learn English as a prerequisite for residence in the United States is unnecessary and absurdly reactionary.
yes.
Yes I do agree and that is part of the new immigration plan that is now in congress.
It'd be nice if all people coming in from foreign countries knew english, or at least enough to get around, but unfortunately you aren't looking at the whole picture.
Many of the people who come in legally already know english, & some have been on waiting lists for years. There are many who come in illegally that don't speak english. We could post further restrictions on those coming in legally, but it wouldn't have any effect on those coming in illegally, and would probably prompt more to arrive in the US by illegal means.
What I would like is for there to be a further emphasis on teaching in english instead of teaching in the native language of the student. I understand that they don't speak english that well, but they must be taught english in order to survive in the US.
I do.I'm emigrating to the states and I believe that you should make an effort to speak the common language of the country you're in, like the old saying 'when in rome do as the romans do'. English is my first language but I also studied french Italian and german at school and whatever the language of whichever country I go to (even on holiday) I would make an effort to learn even just the basics of that language, I think it's a mark of respect.
It should be one of the requirements to become a US citizen.
i think you are confusing USA with CHINA. this is a democratic country where people have the right to speak whatever language they want.
i personally would like more immigrants to speak English but its their choice and we shouldn't put those insane requirements before they enter the country.
and this process is completely natural and nothing new. the first generation of immigrants have problems speaking English no matter what country they come from.but the second generation (American born) are fluent in English. Italian, dutch, french they all had and still have the same problem. so i think we should limit the immigration and seal the borders but anything beyond that would be unethical.
Yes. Simply put....if you do NOT learn English, you will not be prosperous in this country.
It may not be a prerequisite to live here. You should have a little time to learn,it is not always easy to learn a new lanquage but you have to try. I think to get citizenship you should have a working knowlege of English. It takes something like 5 years to become a citizen so that should be enough time to learn a bit.
yes.if we move somewhere else we have to learn their language...even to get a job. so yeeeessss
Yes.
Every law written within the United States is written in ENGLISH.

Frank Lloyd Wright (1868-1959)
