If a child is born to an american father and a canadian mother ,,what is its nationality?
Answer:
where is he born? nationality is based on where we are born.
The child's nationality is determined by the country in which he was born.
If you want citizenship in the other country.....the process is simple.
The child is a citizen of the country in which it was born, unless he was born abroad to parents on official business of the country for which they are employed.
It is up to the parents. they can chose either. Although technically the child has dual residency.
It does not matter where you are born.
yes, but I know the rules of dual citizenship have changed in recent years. It used to be that upon the age of 18 the child had to choose citizenship. But now, I really don't know the rules regarding this. You would have to contact an immigration agency to get up to date info.
But as long as he is a child and he has an american parent they are still considered american.
Depends on where the child was born.
The child is a citizen of the country it was born in. Although some countries allow a child to choose when they turn of legal age. Dual citizenship can also be a possibility, although after 9/11 it is harder to get that.
If the child was born in the USA, then the child is American. If the child was born in Canada, the child is Canadian.
However, the child is entitled to Dual Citizenship - meaning the child has 2 passports, one being American because his father is American. And one being Canadian because his mother is Canadian. Therefore he can live in either countries legally.
Wherever the child was born is its nationality. Mel Gibson was born in NY but moved to Australia as a child unless he legally changed his American heritage to Australian he is an American.
As long as your go to the U.S embassy in Canada and register him before he turns 18, he will receive a certificate of birth abroad which means he is an American citizen who was born in another country. As long as one parent is an American Citizen so is any child born to him in wedlock or out of wedlock in any country, without importance given to the other parents nationality. Once in the states you can get an actual birth certificate and no longer need the certificated of birth abroad. Keep in mind you have to do this before he turns 18, after that he will have to immigrate like everyone else.

Kent C. is wrong, any child born abroad to with one parent being a U.S Citizen is automatically an American Citizen, as long as the parents complete the correct paperwork. They too must report the birth immediately to the nearest U.S Embassy.

He would be considered an American citizen in the United States because one of his parents was an American Citizen. He would be considered a Canadian citizen by Canada because they have very similar laws regarding citizenship. It is not Based on location of birth unless the child was born in the United States and neither parent is an American citizen.
Canerican
You don't state where the child was born. But if born in Canada he is a Canadian and depending on other circumstances he could possibly derive U.S. Citizenship. For example a child born on or after 11/14/1986 and one U.S. citizen parent, the U.S. citizen parent would have to prove physical presence in the U.S> or out lying possessions of 5 years, at least 2 after the age of 14.
More details would get a better answer.
Where was the baby born?
My father (US citizen) & my mother (legal resident/Canadian citizen/working to become a citizen) had ME. (born in the USA). I am an American citizen since I was born here.
We have some friends (legal residents/Canadian citizens) that had a baby here. The baby is Canadian.
