Should I have to speak Spanish in America to survive?
Answer:
You really know how to stir things up. Although i am sure you are exaggerating, it does seem harder to talk to someone at a business that you can understand. Our government is afraid if address this we might look like mean selfish people instead of people who want unity and who don't wanting illegals determining our heritage. Good luck in the job hunt.
It's not that hard to get a job. Millions of people do it every day. Being smart enough to learn a second language could help open your options, but isn't a requirement. Stop blaming other people for your own shortcomings. Pinche hue...
I think its a Joke I refuse to learn Spanish just for a job in AMERICA!!!
In the next 20 years, that's going to be the case. Get ready for it (especially when we are going to be grantig amnesty to 20 million mostly Spanish-speaking people)!
If I go to France, I would be expected to learn and speak French, same thing if I went to Japan... China, etc... why are people allowed to come here and speak any other language except English?
Si!
I would learn some of it to understand it but I would never speak it to facilitate the Spanish people who refuse to learn the English language.
Most countires outside US have English as a second language, with some countries beginning as early as 3rd grade in elementary schols.
Multi-lingual applicants (of any language) will always have an advantage over a single language.
you have a few options:
1. pick a new line of work
2. learn Spanish
3. accept that learning any other language makes you more marketable
4. accept that our country is slowly changing
5. sit back have a fish taco w/ a corona, listen to some shakira, and watch Chivas play american on futbol today because our country slowly but surely is becoming brown!!!!
Switzerland has three official languages. You don't hear them crying they can't find a job because of language barriers, they are one of the most educated, wealthy countries in the world.
Call a lawyer. I believe English was "proclaimed" to be the official language.
No one should be forced to learn Spanish to get a job. People who immigrate to a country should be forced to learn the language of the country that they immigrate to. Here in the US that would be English. I flat out refuse to learn Spanish. My grandparents immigrated here from Austria and they had to learn English, no one helped them out or made sure they had an interpreter. People need to study the language of their new country before moving there to aleast be able to understand what is being said to them and maybe be able to speak it brokenly if nothing else. At the end of the day, it is the responsibility of the immigrant to learn the language NOT everyone else's.
I wish it wasn't that way.
I don't want to learn Spanish
actually america doesnt have a official language. in america we speak both english and spanish. maybe you should, it gives you a advantage to those who dont
Well that depends where You live and what kind of Job are You Looking for?
If You are a Customer service Rep and they'll pay You for the assistance in other languages..Of Course Learn the Language.
If the Job is in a Spanish Speaker Dominat area...well don't apply for It..
But Ussually they pay You an extra Porcentage in Your Salary for Speaking a Second Language...
What exactly do you do for a living? I don't speak Spanish, and yet I have never had a problem getting a job. I understand where you are coming from, but the fact is that you really don't need to know Spanish to survive. That is an exaggeration. That said, it really is not like any other skill. There was a time when people were complaining: should I have to know how to use a computer to get job? Is that fair? Odds are any answer you apply to that question can easily be applied to Spanish. If your field requires Spanish, then just learn Spanish.
No, let's start a whole new language. Let's start our own businesses and teach only a select group of people that language and require that anyone who works at our place of business know and understand our special language. If we just refuse to buy any products manufactured or sold by these companies that demand that spanish be spoken, we can stop them. I understand spanish but I will never speak it to an illegal immigrant or in the workplace. I listen and feign stupidity so I can spy on them. A couple of times I understood what was being said and shocked the m-f's by answering them with their own foul language -- that was at the courthouse and they were talking about gangs and gang warfare while demanding an interpretor for court. I have exposed court interpretors' lies about what they told the criminals was being said. You'd be surprised at what goes on.
I think if we are smart, we should be learning Chinese.
No, you should not.
Yes, you all are hypocrites!
Unless you have a job where you will be spending most of your time with spanish speakers, but there are not a lot of jobs that require those who speak Spanish. So it is probably some other reason why you are not getting the job you want.
i'm afraid so

Estados Unidos de Norte America !!
Comprende ??
Our political leaders want to understand who is in the country and where they are coming from. This will be improved if many current resident aliens become legal. Immigration policy changes are mostly to stem terrorism. Somehow a significant number of people have latched onto this political topic as a primarily economic issue which it used to be, but now from a federal perspective, it is mostly a security issue.
Underskilled citizens have always complained about letting too many foreigners in to compete in the work force and voting booth, but the real solution to their problem is improving skills to enhance employability.
This issue is really about racism, some are genuinely concerned but others just hate seeing people that are not white speak in a foreign language. And this is a fact, Typhoon's response is an example of it and how many thumbs up s/he's gotten.
The answer to the question is no, it does give you an extra edge, but there are lots of other variables that must come into play.
I don't know of what places we are talking about that are imposing knowledge of spanish, unless it's an agency that deals directly with foreigners, but otherwise that would be discrimination. Afterall english is the language of this country. And the language most widely spoken.
And it's not that foreigners "refuse" to learn english. The fact is that some are lazy or too busy, some find it difficult and just stop trying, and some think they can get by with what they know.
But many immigrant haters have already decided, that it is as they believe. So even these words, will be dismissed.
