Does "legal"status give one a right to vote?

Or do you have to be a U.S. citizen?

Answer:
You have to be a citizen.

There are a few localities where 'residents' can vote for town council kind of stuff, but not many.
Citizen.
Nope, you cannot vote as a resident, only as a citizen...
Voting is a right of citizenship, not residency. Even certain citizens (convicted felons) can have their right to vote revoked. To allow non-citizens to vote would be a yellow brick road for a foreign power to take over control of our government, not a good idea!
You are supposed to be a citizen. However, if you will simply check out your election laws and check with your voter registration office, if illegal immigrants lie on their voter registration claiming they are citizens, they will be issued a voter registration card and will vote in our elections illegally. The voter registration people say they are not required to check the status of the person -- that is the job of the person doing the voter registration. So, if the people doing the registrations are pro-illegal immigrant and are just as dishonest as the illegals, why wouldn't they just lie. We are already aware that the ICIRR was having illegal immigrants and non-citizens register immigrants to vote and we were going to challenge the elections but the law doesn't work for the citizens. It only works for the lawbreakers. We have lost our country to lawbreakers and traitors and since the majority of our citizens have refused to vote and to become involved in their government, it's our own fault.
Only U.S. citizens are allowed to vote.
Yes, and that is exactly what the Dems want. The Dem party can only win when illegals or dead people vote or when people start voting 2, 3 or 4 times, because they don't need a picture ID.
I was going to ask this same question! I am totally confused why our politicians are catering to people who supposedly can not vote!!! What is up with that. But yes I knew you had to be a citizen but then with all the dodging of laws then I am questioning are they going to give them votes and do it where no one knows?
No,

Our political leaders want to understand who is in the country and where they are coming from. This will be improved if many current resident aliens become legal. Immigration policy changes are mostly to stem terrorism. Somehow a significant number of people have latched onto this political topic as a primarily economic issue which it used to be, but now from a federal perspective, it is mostly a security issue.

Underskilled citizens have always complained about letting too many foreigners in to compete in the work force and voting booth, but the real solution to their problem is improving skills to enhance employability.
