What is affidavit of support?

Answer:
It is a form that must be submitted with your I-485 adjustment for permanent status. This form allows USCIS to determine if you are able to support the person you are petitioning for. It also outlines the fact that you will be responsible for the financial welfare of the person you are petitioning for for a certain period of time or until that person is a citizen of the US..
Say you end up divorced...and if that person is forced to to use means-tested state or federal help, the state and/or the federal govt will come after you to foot the bill.so in essense...your stuck..so take care...

EDIT- coolpanamania, it isnt 3 years anymore...it is only 1 year now...
According to the web site, the purpose is "To show that visa applicants have sponsorship and will not become public charges while in the United States."

To download the form, go to the source referenced and click the "Download I-134" link.
When you are sponsoring someone to come to the USA,you must meet certain financial guidelines in order for them to get their visa.It is an application that verifies your income. They also request that you send copies of the last 3 years of your income tax returns. For more information, see www.uscis.gov
