Voluntering in a Hospital W/O SSN?
I was thinking about volunterring at a local hospital for the summer but I do not have an SSN but I do have a federal identidication number. I am legal. I currently hold a valid H-4 status. I have no criminal or illegal history.
My Questions are:
1. Should I encounter any problems when sending in my application?
2. Should i tell them that I don't have an SSN?
3. Should I tell them my Fedreal ID #?
4. ETC.
Can some one please help me? I would appreciate any help/advice that you can give me. I really want to Volunteer at this hospital.
Thank You
Answer:
For volunteer work, the information collected by hospitals is specific to hospital policy for that individual hospital. With the changes to privacy laws for healthcare information since 1996, it is likely that the hospitals are now asking for a little more information that they used to.
I volunteered in a hospital, and later became paid staff. As I was a volunteer back then, I did not need to provide a SSN. However, once I became paid staff, then a SSN or Federal ID # was required in the application process. Even with other affiliated volunteer projects that I lead, we do not ask for SSN, but we do ask for a background check if leading projects with children.
It also depends upon the volunteer assignment you are seeking. If you are looking to volunteer in some of the more sensitive areas that require access to protected healthcare information, the hospital may require additional background checks.
Consult with the local Volunteer Office, Auxiliary Office, Community Relations, or Human Resources Department of the hospital for additional information on application requirements.

Good luck!
I may be wrong but I do believe that you cannot undertake any work, paid or voluntary, unless you have a social security number. I know that was the case with me - I came in on K-1 visa. This might be a question that the attorney who helped you to immigrate would answer over the phone.
Hospitals do a strict background check and I am pretty sure they require SSN,However if it is volunteer work your ID may be enough, call the hospital administration and ask.
