How could a U.S. citizen legally live and work in France?

Without marrying a French citizen.

Answer:
dont shave your armpits and stick your nose up high~ and forge a french ID photo??
WHy would you want to? They are rude and don't like Americans
When you apply for citizenship to live in France, you must show that you have already found work in country
Serious answer: be a freelancer - if you have a provable income that isn't dependent on location, you can legally live in France (after following some administrative directions for permits, insurance, and such.)

Or, if you're not against getting married, marry any EU citizen who wants to live in France. My guy is a Swede.
