Do you feel Britain is a better country to live in today, than it was 30 years ago?
Sun! Lower tax, better standard of living or the fear of higher crime?
Like to have your opinions please...
Answer:
First & foremost 30 years ago we were not governed by faceless bereaucrats who consider that they know what is best for us. They did not poke & pry into every aspect of an individuals life. We were actually treated as responsible adults. Children played safely on the streets and if you didn't behave you got a clip round the ear. Crime still made front page news and there was still, in the main, a respect for the individual and his property.
It wasn't perfect, but at least old people could walk down the street in safety without the fear of being mugged for a couple of bob by some yob who was feeling a little bored.
Compare that to today and you have your answer.
You really cannot blame people for moving abroad out of the mess we are in. I for one do not want to grow old in this country. Old age is seen as a sign of weakness and vulnerability with no respect attached.
In stark contrast is the fact that most countries see their elderly as an asset to be respected for their experiences and knowledge. That's why middle aged brits are moving abroad. It's not the tax. It's not the sun. They just want to be safe.
No, id like to walk down the street and not seen any asylum seekers. Standards are lower than ever (we were around 37 on the ranking of life quality) and the birth of scallys and chavs just about sums it up
I dont know, I was only 4 thirty years ago, so I cant remember what it was like.
I wouldn't know wasn't around 30 years ago. It's Ok now I suppose could be worse places to live
We didn't have the terrorist attacks as bad as they are now, Britain is getting a scary place to live in.
YES now smoking has been banned in public places. Not before time.
No. It is unrecognisable as the country in which I was born. In those days we had Christmas, could park just about anywhere, murder was usually intended rather than random and a lot less frequent as was general crime and knew, with a good degree of certainty, not only how much things were going to cost in the shops but also how the law stood on most subjects that concerned us. Oh wait a minute. 30 years ago. About the same AND we had Concorde!
In some ways it is, in some ways it isn't. We have more luxury items in the home - but then no one is safe on the streets. We or nearly all of us are earning more money, yet there is more poverty.
I know I prefer my childhood to that available today. But there are too many iff and buts t undetake a ful comparison.
gosh, i don't know. what was it like 30 years ago? it sounds pretty scary today. with all that's been on the news you'd wonder when you go to the doctor is this the one who's going to bomb me tomorrow. also, the British pound is outrageous right now. It's like double the dollar. If 20 BPs equals about 40 USDs, I couldn't afford to buy groceries.
Well i didnt have to worry about money or mortgages then as younger at school and lived at home so not sure on that front, but I think life was better then. The streets were not filled with roaming hoodies and you rarely heard about someone being shot dead, or knifed every 5 minutes. Plus you could have a game of conkers without the PC brigade trying to ban it and also sing ba ba black sheep at school without offending anyone. Im about to rant think I need some lunch!
No, but neither is the United States. I do believe the Brits have a loyalty to their country that U.S. citizens do not have to the U.S.
I think that familiy ties are less than they were 30 years ago, people are less likel to be married with kids at 25 so more free to move about, if you had said 20 years ago then I would say yes, it's miles worse now, but my family left 30 years ago becasue it was so awful, came back about 23 years ago but it seems to be in decline again, my siser left, I'd like to as would my other sister, my parents only spend 50% of their time here. The PC and red tape brigade are making me worry I'm breathing in an non-approved manner!
No. No country is. We, as the human race, have become complacent. Its caused society as a whole to actually regress instead of progress over the last 30 years. Sure, there's new technology, but it is all for entertainment. There's been nothing new introduced to improve mankind. nothings been invented to replace any technology that we still use from the 60's, just improvements. Guess we ran out of ideas.
Well let's see..Record taxation. (We're taxed for just about everything except farting at the moment) Mass immigration where the English language is a minority in many parts of the country. Married mothers would have to work and extra 100 hours per week to get the same as as a single working mother.(No wonder the family has disintigrated.and the country over-run with unruley brats!!) Rediculous prices for alcohol and petrol. And 3 'main parities' running the country that no longer seem to have opposing views as long as they get to keep their cushey jobs. Free speech for the whole country out of the window..etc...etc..etc.. back the 70's, the free speech, the discipline at school as well as at home, the family and most importantly....the feeling of being proud to be British!!!
The answer's got to be mixed. Some things are better, some worse. Remember the three-day-week, strikes, power cuts? There might have been a bit more law and order, but it was the time of skinheads and seriously corrupt police. Oh, an Northern Ireland was seeing more terrorism than we've got at the moment.
In 1979 we ended up voting for Margaret Thatcher - things must have been bad!
Were there fewer Muslims living in Britain than there was 30 years ago? There's your answer.
no, thats why I'm an ex-pat [although can't remember 30 years ago, I take the gist]
where do I start? weather, immigration - specifically draining the benefits system, the benefits system - where its more beneficial to live off the state than to work, the demise of the once best-in-the-world national health system, the demise and utterly disgraceful way our armed forces are treated, the deterioration of our educational system and the dumbing down of exams, the plethora of Health & Safety legislation that effectively molly-coddles us, the way our government decides that our views are not to be considered, high taxation, no family values anymore, how the police are attempting to do an impossible job with their hands tied behind their backs, how the justice system stinks and now the victim is more likely to get charged than the perpetrator, how an englishmans home is not his castle anymore, increasing crime rates, lower local services, the real term value of a higher cost of living, increase in homelessness, dirtier streets, increased vandalism and the whole "yob culture" especially now the drinking laws have been relaxed, how the government donates our taxpayers money to abroad charities / causes but refuses to get its own house in order first, .........
Do you really have to ask this question?
ridiculous, ridiculous, RIDICULOUS ! THAT is what this country is now !
So much for BRITAIN eh?
:-)
30 years ago- i don't know -i'm not that old
15 years ago-yes it was
No i think its much worse then it was thirty years ago. 30 years ago, our troops were not dying in Iraq, we didn't have any bombings, the NHS was much better, with everyone geting a good service, there were not as many illegal immigrants claiming benifits from our taxes, these was no fear of geting murdered when you walk down the street as much as there is today. Also the government provided free university education, but now they are selfish enough to make us pay even more money, not to mention the billions of pounds we are already being taxed these days. Britain is no longer holding the status that most of us hoped it did, i am sad to say.
Personally I am almost 30 years old and in my lifetime I feel this country has just got worse and worse and worse. I cannot remember the exact ranking but we have one of the highest taxes and one of the lowest standars of living on earth. Not bad going for one of the richest and most powerful countries eh?
I am no longer proud to be British. (I used to be.) And as soon as I qualify as a nurse, I am sodding off to Oz!!!
