Who is more ignorant?
I keep reading posts from people talking about how "stupid" US citizens are for not learning Spanish, but how "stupid" can one be to go to an English speaking country and not learn English?
Why should I have to learn Spanish because some people who are coming to this country illegally refuse (or are too incompetent) to learn English?

Um, no offense, but the answer to this is obvious. You of course don't, and shouldn't have to learn a language if you are not in a country that speaks that language.
Well said. If I lived in the American SW and was in a position where I interacted with Spanish speaking AMERICANS on a regular basis, I would do my best to try to understand them, but would also do everything in my power to urge them to learn English.

I agree. I speak a little Spanish. ( I took 3 years of it in High School) I hate in when people come into my work and don't speak a word of English and I'm supposed to figure out what they want.

people who come here try to learn it. try to prove they are not. it is probably taking a long time. it won't happen in a day.
if you take some langauge class, won't it take you about 2 years to acutally know that langauge enough to speak it to a native speaker. For example., a Mexican person comes here, to work, when are they going to take time to learn a langauge and how would they pay for it. If they are going to learn it from TV, i think it will take a little time. you just need to be patient.

I completely agree! As I said in answer to a similar post, if I move to France, should I expect them all to learn and start speaking English for me? It's ridiculous. But it's just another way that liberal political correctness is taking things too far.
One thing alot of people don't know is that most illegal Mexicans can't read write or speak Spanish properly.
I think you right people from foreign country's who come here should learn English. I am from India and i think foreign people who go there should learn our language, however most people now over there know English anyways.
Let's break you down: By your question, you are stating your position that Americans are ignorant if they don't learn Spanish. It's just that Spanish speaking immigrants are also ignorant? OK so everyone in the world needs to speak the language of every neighboring country or risk being labelled ignorant?
As a general rule, the country being inundated with immigrants determines the rules. We speak English here, so the newcomers need to adapt to us. We should not and will not adapt to them. Are Americans MORE ignorant than Spanish speaking immigrants who don't learn English? NO! Americans shouldn't be labelled ignorant at all in this case. Forget about who is more ignorant. The only ones who need to step up are immigrants.
Maybe you need this in smaller pieces. If I came to your parent's house for dinner, and brought a friend, should we complain that your Mom didn't serve what we wanted? Or should your Mom serve what she wanted to serve? Is your Mom ignorant for not serving what we wanted instead of what she had planned on serving in the first place?

How can somebody possibly be a citizen of this country and not speak the language? As for stupid; I would say that we are more stupid for not going house to house, farm to farm and factory to factory and burn these criminals out.

I can't believe after all of the crime, injury to our financial well being and loss of neighborhoods people are still trying to defend these criminals. It's not immigration, it's a crime and its not just people trying to find a better life, it's an invasion. Americans won't work! That's a laugh and if you believe that you're the dumbest of all.
Seems to me that the issue really isn't "ignorance" on the illegals parts, so much as it is ignorance by the Americans to have let this fiasco get this far out of hand in the first place, and then coddling them as if we owe them something!! It makes me crazy! I don't BLAME the Mexicans at all for taking advantage. If I were in their shoes, I might do the same thing. But I'm not, and this is OUR country, NOT THEIRS, and here, our main language is English. Why are we so afraid to have our own rights anymore? What's happened to OUR backbones?
No one is requiring you to learn Spanish or any other language, many employers have requirements for employment, much the same as having a degree etc.
If you don't have the language requirements or degree(s) you do not get the job, I have lost out on job opportunities because I did not speak (Apache) That is not discrimination, but a employment requirement. If you do not understand what a person is trying to communicate, say I do not know. Simple!!

As an American, I don't care who you are! if you work with the public,please, at least speak enough English to be easily understood! I believe my country is for everyone, to be able to work where they can, but some English is needed in certain places. I mean like fast food, or restaurants, and in retail stores! Also, in other countries, you need to learn the language, as everyone does not speak English! I think it is a common courtesy to learn the language of the country you visit!
Try working in an ER. You and the staff you work with are flooded with trauma cases and you have to find some one that can speak Mexican when you are trying to do triage.
ohbuck26 is correct in a way, some of the illegals don't read or write Mexican so how can they learn English.

If I go to their country without an interpreter, I'd try to improve my Spanish. However, when they come to this country I'm not going to learn another language.
I speak Portuguese...why? My wife is from Brasil...when I visit Brasil, I speak Portuguese...it would be an insult if I tried to make them speak english in their country...on the other hand...because I do speak portuguese, I communicate well and my needs are met in a friendly manner because they understand that I took the time to learn their language! and besides...it is a sign of respect to them...my wife speaks english, and she knew english when she was still in Brasil...
The reason why most who immigrate here dont bother to speak english is quite simply they do not want to assimilate into our culture...so they think why bother? if it was a matter of cost, NEWSFLASH! almost everywhere you go they offer free english classes! so really, there is no excuse except laziness...
Learning another language gives you a broader perspective in life. Learning another language also opens opportunities to progress and succeed in any country. I am sure all immigrants are willing to learn the language but the fact that most earn minimum wage and lack education and mobility makes it more difficult for them to attend school. As for US citizens who refuse to learn Spanish, they have the right to do so. English is the official language in the US and they shouldn't be forced to learn any language in specific. Nevertheless, those who do learn to speak a language spoken by millions of people in the US and abroad will certainly have an advantage over those who do not.

I have no reason to learn Spanish. In fact I refuse to learn, out of protest. I would like to learn another language - FRENCH or American Sign Language!
I only work with high income executives that SPEAK ENGLISH. We are an English speaking country and it will always be that way.

OMG. You will not have to learn how to read Spanish. You will never have to learn Spanish in any way, shape, or form. This is America, with a majority speaking English and only 15% who are Hispanic. That number is hardly growing.
The most ignorant are the people who figure "Oh. I'll never need to learn another language. I don't wanna." Because, then they don't even want to learn.
At least the illegal immigrants want to learn English, and try to learn English. They have to in order to survive here, huh? They want a better life, and they want to be like us (without the hatred, man).
Some don't have the money to learn, and never is one "incompetent;" I'm shocked to hear anyone call anybody else incompetent. Older people try their hardest, so commend them for that and encourage it. Don't try to force them out because their attempt is not quite up to par. Honestly, it's like deporting people because they didn't pass a calculus class.
The Spanish instructions are to help anyone who speaks Spanish to simply get by. Like the directions on a t.v. dinner. They have a right to eat, right? Or not, because they speak Spanish?
America is NOT trying to force everyone to learn Spanish. It won't ever. The learning of another language is a choice made by an individual, and their rights would be tread upon if everyone was forced to learn Spanish. But it is an excellent idea to learn it. There are a lot of business opportunities if you do.

I feel the same way. If everyone else felt like this, we would not be forced to see spanish everywhere and have to press 1 for english.
It is getting ridiculous. We can't even get certain jobs now if we don't speak spanish-this is an english speaking country and I have to learn spanish to get certain jobs?
Too many US citizens are willing to conform to them and not willing to make them conform to us and we will lose in the end because of that.
what is stupid is entering another country and then making demands. I could learn spanish if I wanted, but why should I when I have no plans to visit Mexico
