Where is the best place for an American to live as an "expatriate"?

I am looking for a place to live, outside the U.S. Living conditions, cost of living, culture, etc. need to be considered. Just tired of the rat race, because the rats are winning.

Answer:
1) Canada: friendlier, cleaner, and still with all the comforts of home including food and tv similarities yet without the same political nonsense and the like.

The rest are in no particular order:

2) United Kingdom: Brits, as serious as they can be, are a charming people and there's tons of stuff to do...if you like pubs and wait, oh yeah, pubs...

3) Bahamas: Close to home, beautiful, and relaxed. What more could you ask for?

4) Australia: Same reasons as Canada, except warmer and with better accents :-)

5) New Zealand: (See #4)

6) India, or some country of the sort: English speaking, exotic, and your dollar can last you an entire day. Pretty much every comfort you could ever want (big house, servants, blah blah blah) is there, not to mention about 5,000 years of culture

7) Bahrain: sort of a cross between India and Australia

9) Italy: friendly folks, relaxed living and of course, two words: amazing food.

10) Hawaii: I know this is still part of the US officially, but lets face it, anyone who has been there will tell you it might as well be its own country. Amazingly beautiful place, absolutely wonderful people and 80 degrees all year round.
Canada ay
no no no,dont come to Canada.stay and fix your own country.
Prague is fantastic. Very safe, lots of people speak English. Great transportation system.....metro & bus. Very clean, I would trust medical care. Cheaper to live than the U.S., but not 3rd world, you know? Affordable to live unless you are purchasing a house in the city itself.....real estate is getting high.
Depends on how much money byou have. Six years of the Bush economy have left most Americans too poor to settle in most countries. If you want to settle in Mexico you will need at least $100,000 cash. Australia and New Zealand used to require large deposits to offset Health Costs. Face it, if you don't live in California or New York you probably can't afford it
If you're liberal: France. You'll like the low unemployment.

If you're conservative: Canada, England or Australia.
