Why does Bush vow permanent ban on future illegal migrants Doesn't the current immigration laws already ?

President George W. Bush promised Saturday to permanently bar future illegal immigrants from the United States as he renewed his push for immigration reform, a centerpiece of his domestic agenda.
A revised reform package was reintroduced in the Senate this past week after its predecessor failed on June 7 to garner enough votes to cut off debate and move for final passage.

The collapse of the first proposal has prompted a personal intervention by the president, who went to Capitol Hill to plead for giving the bill a second chance.

But while he has succeeded in putting the proposal back on the Senate agenda, the legislation is facing strong opposition from both Republicans and Democrats, who argue that granting legal status to an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants will only encourage more people to sneak across the poorly guarded border. "Under this bill, those caught crossing illegally will be permanently barred from returning to the United States on a work or tourist visa," the president stated.
The operative phrase here is "those caught crossing illegally", which means that once they get across without getting caught, they're home free just like the 20 Million already here.

Doesn't the current immigration laws already permanently ban illegal migrants? That's what makes them ILLEGAL as far as I can see, what are your views on this?

Answer:
Wow. He promises this because he knows no one will enforce it, yet it looks like he's trying to appease the citizens. He's only fooling about 30% of the nation (even the illegals aren't fooled by this one!) and the rest of us have been so propagandized to not think outside the tiny little box, that we aren't sure what steps to take. Most of us realize that this is going to get bloody ugly, but we are trying to avoid physical violence. Let me tell you this, the day I see ANYONE burning an American flag or raising the flag of any other nation above our own, on our own ground, will be the day I will need some serious bail money. That's not a threat. It's a guaratee.
All he is trying to do is get people on board to support this bill. Bush can promise to build a 80 foot wall that encompassed the entire US and deport illegals as long as this bill passes. The question is whether or not he is actually going to do it or just half a** it like he has done with a lot of the stuff he has promised.
If caught now you are usually given a chance or three to self deport, and if deported formally (after that) are allowed to petition to come back after 10 years, or 5 with a waiver.

This would be a change in consequences. You could never be a citizen, for example.

However, we have some tough laws on the books now. The problem is that they are never used and sanctuary policies cause people to look the other way.
