Why don't kids get off of school for Mexican holidays?
Answer:
Because this ISN'T Mexico. At least not yet..
Are you kidding? Hispanics have the highest drop out rate and you want MORE days off?
Why don't you just drop out today since you're going to drop out eventually? Save the U.S. taxpayer for paying for your education that you will stop using.
Because the only point of Mexican holidays is to get drunk.
Why would you want your kids to get drunk?
Go cry somewhere else. I don't get Canadian holidays off.
Because those are OUR national holidays, if you wnat to celebrate Mexican holidays go to Mexico..Ding!
kids don't get off for mexican holidays because we live in America. adn we gety off for american holidays. In Mexico, do you think they get off for American holidays???
Memorial Day is a holiday in our country the USA. Mexican holidays are NOT holidays here in the USA.
Simple: WE DON'T LIVE IN MEXICO!!
this is America. that's why. Memorial Day honors American Veterans.
ahh hha hha
funny well sir give it 3 more generations and every mexican holoday will mark a calendar here in the us of texmex
Your kids do get to celebrate their heritage . . . seems you forgot about Martin Luther King Day . . .
If you want to celebrate your heritage, go back to Mexico. This is the USA.
Well, in Mexico we never celebrated American holidays. If the U.S. celebrated every international Holiday, we would have everyday of the year off! My daughters and I celebrate Mexican holidays on weekends and I teach them about our ancestry through books and activities. You don't need a day off.
I think that cinco de mayo is not an American holiday however I would take that day off (and any other for that matter) if it was a holiday. But something like a Mexican-American holiday would be great. Cesar Chavez Day would be more appropriate. MLK day is also a day for all minorities without the struggles of him and many other Black Americans in this country they could probably still kill us and throw us over the border.

because this is AMERICA, you dweeb! and memorial Day is the day we're supposed to remember those fallen soldiers who gave their lives so you can BE a dweeb!
The congress or sate has not pass the bill for all different ethnic groups holidays yet,but i am sure it is gonna happen soon.
Cuba Si, Castro NO!
Memorial day is a day we go visit family and friends who have passed away, and I thought Mexicans were family orriented,HELLO?And when kids get out of school,it means all kids get out no matter what race you are,If you want to get out of school for Mexican holidays tell it to the Mexican government ,When in AMERICA,DO AS THE Americans do,or shut up!
If you want them to know there heritage take you an them an go back to mexico an stay there we really do not care about you are your kids so just leave if you do not like are holidays an stay there.this is the USA or you to dum to know that
Because you are not in Mexico. You are in the United States of America. If you want them to get out of school for Mexican holidays then go back to Mexico. It's as simple as that.
You are a traitor. Go back to Mexico.
They do... in Mexico. Like it or not you are now in the USA and if you truly desire to be a US citizen than you should learn about your new culture. I am an American living abroad and I do not get US holidays off; I get the host country's holidays off. It is their country and you should respect the culture within which you reside. This does not mean you forget your own culture. Go ahead and continue to celebrate, but always keep in mind, when in Rome, do as the Romans.
For the same reason that Romanian kids don't get out of school for Romanian holidays.
This is the USA. We have our own holidays. Your kids get off on the USA holidays right? Should they also take Turkish, Romanian, Rusian, French...holidays as well as the Mexican holidays you want them to take?
You can have a private holiday observance of those days after school or alternately on a weekend.
You don't know what Memorial Day is? You are raising your family in the US. Take time to use google.com and search for Memorial Day. It is one of the most important holidays in the US.
Teach your kids respect for their American heritage as well as their Mexican heritage.
Because you're not in Mexico. If you want to celebrate Mexican holidays, move to Mexico.
You also have the choice of keeping your kids home for your holidays if you want. They can let their teacher know ahead of time that they'll be missing school because their family celebrates X-holiday and they need to get their homework ahead of time. You can't expect American schools to recognize every holiday from every country in the world, can you? They kids would never be in school. That's why we have "Official" holidays.
My heritage is German, but I don't celebrate any German holidays because I don't see myself as a German - I see myself as an American. It is called assimilation. My family assimilated into the American society and culture when they came over here from Germany.
Unless you count drinking German beer as celebrating German holidays - in that case, everyday could be a holiday.
;-)
Your going to have to stand in line buddy... I wish I could put one of those laughing smiley faces. Look, this is getting out of hand. My cousins don't get any of their religious holidays off, they are part Jewish. What about St. Patricks day, it is celebrated but you don't get it off. I live in a small town in the South now, and they get Martin Luther King day off. but it is not called that.it is called Teacher in Service Day. Which is insane, and you don't want to get me started down that road... anyways... You need to look up the meaning behind Memorial Day... and then apologize.
If you want to celebrate Mexican holidays, GO TO MEXICO! This is NOT Mexico and why should we celebrate holidays of another country - GEEZE!
It's bad enough that they keep talking about the "5th of May." That's stupid and is only an excuse for people to get drunk!
Because we dont live in Mexico. Your kids will drop out anyways so why worry about them missing a few more days of school.
Because you don't live in Mexico. If you want the Mexican holidays off, then go live there. What made you ask such an ignorant question?
And let me just clarify that I think you're bringing this up in early May (today is May 10th) either because of 5 de Mayo (May 5th) or Dia de las Madres (May 10th). There is no way that either of these is a no-work holiday.
Cinco de Mayo is not a major holiday, even in Mexico. This is not their independence day celebration. It is merely celebrating winning the battle of Puebla and defeating the French troops. It was basically the beginning of the end, which did not come until 16 de Septiembre (Their independence day, which IS a day off in Mexico).
Mother's Day is also not a national holiday that people get off work, either in the U.S. or in Mexico.
And as for the racist ignorant answerers: I am Mexican and got a college education - as have many of my cousins. What makes you so hostile to my culture and so willing to bet that Latino children will be high school dropouts?
Additionally, the majority of Mexican Nationals I see are hard working and have jobs that no one with an American birth certificate would even want (including me).
Antis suck- please stop making us look bad with these questions. If you want your kids to stay home to celebrate Mexican holidays you can do so, I'm sure nobody will object. But don't expect that schools are going to make Mexican holidays a national holiday. National holiday= nation's holiday= nation= United states! And if you don't know what the American holidays celebrate and you live here please make an effort to look them up. It is because of your comments and questions like this that people think that we are people incapable of adapting to the American culture.
You now live in the US, so it is up to you to learn about our holidays and their meanings. There's nothing --- no law or court or institution --- that can keep you from celebrating holidays or traditions from other countries, but it shouldn't interfere with schooling.
Now, for the racist yahoos who answered your question, will y'all please read your answers and try to grasp how ignorant and small-minded you at least seem to the rest of the world, including many of your fellow "born right here in the US of A" Americans? Racism and bigotry solve no problems and immediately tend to make your arguments essentially invalid and not to be considered by reasonable people. There is a tradition in this immigrant nation of ours to nonetheless be hostile to immigrants, from the Irish to the Germans to the Japanese and all Asians to African-Americans who've been here with us since the 17th Century. It's perhaps our least attractive attribute as a people and you do neither yourselves nor your rather dubious cause any good by sinking to the low points you seem to revel in. The point of those of us who don't see it as a threat is quite simple --- we're a nation of immigrants, immigrants who have come to our nation throughout our history, both legally and illegally, and our law is that if you're born here, you're one of us whether your parents or you speak Spanish, English, or the German still used amongst some religious groups in the Northeast. Look your arguments against "immigration" in the eye and I'd bet money they wouldn't be raised if the immigrants were from the UK or Ireland (we've at least gotten over that discriminatory impulse) or our neighbor to the North. Look yourselves in the eye and deal with the fact that most objective readers would view your comments as predominantly based primarily on discrimination and *that makes your arguments essentially void ab initio* for most folks. Grow up, people, and at least have the grace not to be rude to people or judge folks simply based on national background, appearance, or language. Many children of immigrants or immigrants themselves, legal or no, are serving in this mess we have (thank you, Mr. President) in Iraq right now. If you perhaps raise the notion of bringing those troops back from that hell, even if to be sent to Mexico, I might be willing to listen to you...and still discount your arguments. Racism is ugly. Look in the mirror and at least realize that.
If you want your kids to have Mexican holidays off, maybe you should move back to Mexico. And if you don't know what Memorial Day commemorates you shouldn't be in this country anyways.
