How do I know if a work visa is a forgery?

As an employer, I want to hire only people who are legal to work. When interviewing an obviously foreign person, can I ask for their "papers" and if so, how do I know if they're fake? I've never seen any, and as far as I know they could be typed or a card or?? Any ideas?

Answer:
You can ask if the person is entitled to work in the US. If you can make a photocopy of the purported work authorization, you can fax or email it to the State Department's Fraud Prevention Programs (CA/FPP) for a highly educated opinion on its validity.
They will have a "Work Permit" Card...it has reflective things on it of the Department of Homeland Security...they are hard to fake...
Be careful about that one! How do you know that somebody is "obviously foreign"?? You could be setting yourself up for a discrimination lawsuit.

What you CAN ask is, "Are you legally able to work in the United States?"
