Why don't most Mexicans learn English before coming to the U.S.?

So your probelm is what? The fact that most Mexican Americans will work in places most Americans refuse. The language thing is a barrier and I have been to many and taught ESL classes and yes for your info, they are packed. So its not that they don't want to learn English, its just that they want to work. Look around at any building or house being built. Do you see any English speaking Americans out there laying bricks or what not. So whats the problem with you not being able to order? Perhaps you should of asked for Management or did you even try to get what you wanted? I can slightly agree if you're in a country its to your own advantage to learn the language. I guess thats why the ESL classes are so full
because they didn't. there are plenty of other people that come into the US without having learned english, not just mexicans.
They like the American dream but not the American language.
When that question get answered maybe we can find out why all of the illegal immigrants don't become legal.

Slight exaggeration on your part, wouldn't you say? Although I do agree that if anyone is going to be in any country for a period of time, say more than a month, they should make an effort to learn the language before and during their stay.
All people should be required to learn it but it's hard to enforce that when people are coming to America illegally. Most of them only need to hold their hand out and say GIMME FREE.LOL NOITALL I'M SO SICK OF THE SAYING THEY DO JOBS AMERICANS WON'T I'VE HAD MY SHARE OF TOUGH SHI**TY JOBS THERE IS NO JOB I CAN'T OR WON'T DO SO SHUT UP.
Funny thing is in Tiajuana they know English better then most Americans. In CA, right on the border, I didn't hear one word of spanish. I got back to NY and went to the diner. All I heard was spanish.
Why should they learn English since they are catered to. How many times do I have to call different companies and hear 'Hable Espanol, prima el numero dos'. How about they get through all the English prompts first and THEN start with the spanish.
Because:
1. Their school doesn't teach English.
2. For the same reason why you don't learn Spanish before you went to Mexico... or even bother to learn basic Spanish when you know how useful it would be.
Having said that, learning it once their here should be expected, mandatory, etc. No matter how the illegal immigration problem is resolved, one should expect those applying for legal status to have a working knowledge of English.

Its not like our country isnt already in the hole, but here goes more money having to print gov. documents and such in spanish.
Another question? How much will it cost the american tax payers when someone of a different language files a suit because THEIR language is not printed on gov forms and the like??????
MOST don't bother to tqke the time to enter the US Legally yet alone learn the language. Aside from that there are people and companies Hell bent on Kissing there asses at every tern and attempting to make it easier and easier for them Not to learn english. If people stopped cattering to them and there language maybe then they wouldn't have any choice but to learn english.

because it is said that english is the hardest language to learn. did you have to learn a foreign language in school if so have you visited the place where the language is spoken. probably not.
Were you in America? You might have crossed the border and didn't realize it.
Check to see if you were speaking English, don't want to accuse anyone of not understanding English if you were speaking French or something else.
Sometimes when you cross a border even English changes.

Many know English as well as you or I. They sure know how to beg as children in the tourist areas of Mexico. They know it or are atleast famaliar enough to know thank you, please, stop, go, Mr, Mrs, give-me. I don't buy this total ignorance of the language at all. Living in the US for 15 years and don't know word one except "my Rights" and "racist"? Please. Been here since 3, went through the public school system, have 2 children and they need a person to translate "stop...show me your drivers license".?
I never took Spanish but I know enough to know what a taco is vs a burrito. I know gracious or whatever and know it means "thank you". Heck English is taught and spoken on every continent.......way back to just music....they weren't brought up in caves.
because most mexicans who move here don't have much money, which means they couldn't afford private school in mexico, which means they didn't have english classes offered at their school. (and if the did...it was by someone who speaks english about as well as an american speaking spanish in freshman spanish one.)

Pues, yo hablo los dos idiomas, aunque soy cien por ciento Americanita, y blanco como la nieve, y irlandesa/inglesa. Y yo creo que si tuvimos solamente Espanol por las escuelas, tal vez podriamos prestar attencion a solamente las lecciones, y no la letra. !Ingles es tan dificil que nunca! !?Por que nos perdimos tanta horas pensando en como se escribe cada palabra, en lugar que pensar en los ideas mas importantes del mundo?!

the Majory of the people that cross the border is people very poor from the little Towns from the south Mexico (Oaxaca, Chiapas,Guerrrero).. they usually Don´t have Education , How the People of the Big Cities ,like Cd. Mexico, Monterrey , Guadalaja etc...

The last few times I went to a fast-food burger joint, I had a difficult time placing my order because the employees could not understand me. I stopped spending my money at fast-food joints.
As to why most people don't learn English, well, I guess they don't have to because Spanish is becoming the language of US. It is not necessary for them to learn English when so many people speak Spanish.
