What kind of permit do I NEED TO GET TO GO TO MEXICO?

I went to Mexico over spring break and all I needed was a passport.
To get a passport you will need the application that you can get online, your certified birth certificate (not a copy, it has to have the raised seal on it), proof of identity (usually a drivers license), passport photos (some passport facilities have a photo place there), and the $97 fee.
The most important thing is to make sure you apply for your passport in PLENTY of time. It usually take 10-12 weeks from the time your application is received until you get your passport. There are places you can go through that will do a rush order (just google express passports) but its costs extra depending on how fast you need your passport. I think I paid an extra $150 and got mine in about 5 days. Although I think prices have probably gone up because of the changes about who needs a passport has caused a very high number of people trying to get new passports. Also know that if you do rush processing they usually need a copy of your travel itinerary.

i dont know what kind of permit you would need, but I would get my shots before I left...and only drink coca cola and other canned stuff that you are familiar with

If you are driving you do NOT need a passport at this time -- you just need a valid U.S. I.D. (like your driver's license). After next January you will need a passport, but not yet.
If you are flying you need a passport, although they are in the process of changing the law so that (at least for now) you just need to show proof that you have APPLIED for the passport.

To all you folks that answered that you need a passport: You haven't been keeping up with the latest news. Here it is: The passport office is swamped and they've raised the white flag. Now all you need is a receipt showing that you have applied for a passport and a government issued picture I.D.

if you're traveling by land then all you need is a goverment or state issued ID. if your traveling by air then because of the back log at the Passport Centers, all you need is a government or state issued ID and the comfirmation paper showing that you have filed for you passport
