He is lying. It would benefit him as to taxes to marry and change to joint filer with his wife and include his child as a dependent (and could still include his mother if he could file as such as Head of Household). He does not want to marry.
I am an accountant working in personal taxation. Head of Household would be of greater benefit than single filing but it is not of greater benefit than married joint filing.
Yes he could probably claim his mother as a dependent (dependent has to be a citizen or legal resident of Mexico, US, or Canada...who he supports), but that would not change for him if he got married. So all that would change would be his filing status which would benefit him, not harm him (and would add his child as a dependent which he probably can not do currently).
He is lying. I bet she is getting welfare and he doesn't want to give up the free ride. They can live on her gov. checks and use his under the table cash for a new truck or some other junk.
